His most recent book, The End of Outrage (Oxford University Press, 2017), is a study of land-grabbing and informing in west Donegal in the wake of the Famine; it was Irish Times Irish Nonfiction Book of the Year and the American Conference for Irish Studies awarded it the Donnelly Prize for Books in History and Social Science. His other books include Subjects Lacking Words? The Grey Zone of the Great Famine (Quinnipiac University Press, 2017) and, with David Dickson, he edited Hugh Dorian’s memoir of the Famine in north Donegal, The Outer Edge of Ulster (Lilliput, 2000; University of Notre Dame Press, 2001). He was a founding editor, with the critic Seamus Deane, of Field Day Review, a journal of political and literary culture. Douglas M Sinclair Local historian, was born in the old part of Lerwick, Shetland into a seafaring family and has lived there all his life. Douglas’ early years were spent roaming the maze of closes, narrow lanes and piers of the town’s south end and listening to the stories told by the people who lived there. Tales of smugglers, whalers, sailors and fishermen who frequented the town over the centuries fascinated him. The boom days of the herring curing industry has been of particular interest and in fact he worked in a fish factory to earn money when a student. Following a career in the National Health Service, Douglas became a tourist guide and a local magazine columnist writing about Old Lerwick. He recently had a book with a selection of these articles published and continues to research the history of his home town. Ann Marie Saunders Was born in Glasgow to Irish parents and has resided in Lerwick for over 24 years. She became interested especially in the story of the Herring Gutters of the 19th century and will relate the recollections of Willie Halcrow. Annie O Donnell Annie hails from Arlands near Burtonport, Co Donegal and was among the young people who emigrated in the 1950’s to work in the tattie fields of Scotland. She has written a number of books about her life in the Rosses and on emigration. Her first book ‘The Tattie Hoker’ was followed by ‘A Donegal Sunset’ and she is currently writing a third book. BIOGRAPHY OF SPEAKERS Lawerence Lanty & Kathleen Nancy Gallagher Both hail from Arranmore Island and they too were young migrant workers. They will recall their experiences of working in the Tattie Fields and Tunnels of Scotland and beyond. Frank Gallagher Born in Scotland to Rosses parents, Frank will relate the memoirs of his Father and late Mother’s experiences of following the shoals of herring all along the coastline of Scotland down into Great Yarmouth.
