Tonight we celebrate the accomplishments of ten unique individuals who have distinguished themselves within the industry and their community. The obvious change you’ll notice about this year’s induction is that it is entirely virtual. COVID-19 has affected so many facets of our industry and The Gold & Silver Circle is no exception. Despite the change, we hope you will enjoy hearing the wonderful anecdotes of our inductees all from the comfort of your own home. In addition to the Class of 2020, we’re also awarding college scholarships to five well-deserving and diverse students from across the Bay Area. Tonight’s event is free, and we welcome donations to support our College Scholarship Fund. Thank you for joining us tonight as we honor this year’s class of inductees and we look forward to celebrating with you in-person next year for the Gold & Silver Circle Class of 2021. He’s a Silver Circle Member, a 52-time Emmy® Awards recipient, a Trustee with the National Academy, a long-time governor for the Northern California Chapter, and is in his 5th year of service as our Awards Chair. Freedman is a 2nd generation television person. His father, Mike, began with ABC in 1948. Freedman lives in Marin County with his wife, Susan. His daughter, Lauren, works at Smithsonian Channel for CBS in New York City. - 9 - DON SANCHEZ Retired Anchor/Reporter, KGO ABC 7 Alternate Trustee / Cinema Club Chair Silver Circle Class of 2000 MASTER OF CEREMONIES Yes, that’s Don Sanchez in that picture. Same person, different looks after so many years on Bay Area TV. Gone is the mustache. He shaved it off for charity. Don is retired from broadcasting, but that doesn’t diminish his love, fascination and re- spect for the industry. He is still serving as a member of the SAG-AFTRA board. After graduating from the University of Southern California in telecommunications, Don returned to the Central Coast to do radio and then was hired for his first TV job as a reporter at KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo in 1963. Don’s only other TV job was at KGO-TV in San Francisco. He started there in September, 1972, and spent the next 40 years and three months as a reporter, sports reporter, news an- chor, talk show host (“Good Morning Bay Area” in 1989) and finally the arts and entertainment reporter for the last 12 years. Don has received five EMMY® Awards, including the prestigious Governors’ award in 2013 and is a member of the NATAS Silver Circle and the Broadcast Legends. Don is proud of his 50 year career in television which is why he would be honored to be part of the Academy Board to continue assuring the quality of our industry. - 10 - - 11 - SCOTT BUDMAN Technology Reporter, KNTV NBC Bay Area Silver Circle Class of 2020 Emmy® Award recipient and reporter Scott Budman covers the business and tech- nology beat for NBC Bay Area. An Oakland native, Budman joined KNTV in 1995 after working at KEYT in Santa Barbara as a reporter/weekend anchor. He began his broadcasting career in radio as a business reporter for KMNY in Anaheim. Budman anchored various NBC Bay Area newscasts while also doing general as- signment reporting. Co-Creator/Host/Writer of Tech Now, Budman is one of the Bay Area’s most recognizable business and technology journalists. He can be heard on NPR, Alice Radio and is regularly blogs for Forbes and other online publica- tions. Budman volunteers with community organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Clara and Home of Hope, an agency that helps children in India and here in the U.S. transition out of poverty and into employment. Presenter: RAJ MATHAI Anchor, KNTV NBC Bay Area - 12 - CONGRATULATIONS JOANNE Joanne’s two Emmy® Awards were for her work on the “Golden State Killers” and the Midday Newscast. Joanne is not only ridiculously competent but a truly good person. At an early age she loved television & personifies the Girl Scout creed to be kind in thought, word and deed. She keeps in touch with past employees and nurtures friendships. I’m proud to call her my friend. Joanne is, in reality, ABC7’s Wizard of Oz, controlling the station from behind the green screen.
