Chapter 4 Algebraic varieties 4.1 Affine varieties n n n Let k be a field. Affine n-space A = Ak = k . It’s coordinate ring is simply n the ring R = k[x1,...,xn]. Any polynomial can be evaluated at a point a A to yield an element f(a)=ev (f) k. This gives a surjective homomorphism2 a 2 eva : R k.Itskernelma is a maximal ideal. Let us suppose from now on that k is algebraically! closed. Then we have converse. Theorem 4.1.1 (Weak Hilbert Nullstellensatz). Every maximal ideal of R is of the form ma. Given a subset S R,letV (S)= a An f S, f(a)=0 . A set of this form is called algebraic.✓ One can see{ that2 V (|S8)=2V (I)=V (p}I), where I is the ideal generated by S and pI = f n, f n I is the radical. Thus we as well focus on radical ideals, i.e. ideals{ such|9 that2pI} = I. Theorem 4.1.2 (Hilbert’s Nullstellensatz). V sets up a bijection between the set of radical ideals of R and algebraic subsets of An. The inverse sends an algebraic set X to I(X)= f R a X, f(a)=0 . { 2 |8 2 } Theorem 4.1.3. An, are algebraic. The collection of algebraic subsets of An is closed under arbitrary; intersections and finite unions. It follows that An carries a topology, called the Zariski topology, such that the X An is closed if and only if it is algebraic. Be aware that unlike the topologies⇢ in analysis this topology is very weak. It is not even Hausdor↵.A closed subset of An is called irreducible if it is not a union of two proper closed sets. Exercise 11. Show that the following are equivalent for a closed subset X An. ⇢ 1. X is irreducible. 2. Any nonempty open subset of X (with respect to the induced topology) is dense. 18 3. I(X) is a prime ideal. An irreducible subset of An is called an algebraic subvariety. A set is called an affine variety if it is an algebraic subvariety of some affine spaces. We can make the collection of affine varieties into a category as follows. A function n m F : A A is a called regular, if there exists polynomials f1,...,fm R such that! 2 F (a1,...,an)=(f1(a1,...,an),...,fm(a1,...,an)) Such a map is necessarily continuous with respect to the Zariski topologies. The restriction of a regular function between subvarieties An X Y Am is also called regular. One can see that the collection of affine⊃ varieties! and⇢ regular maps forms a category. The coordinate ring of an subvariety X An is the quotient (X)=R/I(X). Given f (X) and a X,definef⇢(a)=f˜(a), where f˜ O R is a polynomial representing2O f. To see2 that this is well defined, observe that2 any other representative is of the form f˜ + g,whereg I(X). Therefore f˜(a)=(f˜ + g)(a). Thus we can view (X) as a ring of functions2 on X. This ring is a finitely generated k-algebra whichO is an integral domain. We refer such an algebra as an affine domain. The coordinate ring construction gives a contravariant functor between these two categories. Theorem 4.1.4 (Affine duality). The functor gives an antiequivalence be- tween the category of affine varieties and regularO maps and the category of affine domains and k-algebra homomorphisms. In more detail, this means that every affine domain is isomorphic to some (X),and O Hom (X, Y ) = Hom ( (Y ), (X)) AffV ar ⇠ AffDom O O Sketch. Then these polynomials define a regular map from X Y which gives the inverse. ! 19 4.2 Projective varieties For various reasons, it is desirable to add points at infinity to An.Butwe want to do this in such a way that algebraic geometry still works. The simplest solution is to pass to projective space n n n+1 P = P = lines in k passing through 0 k { } n+1 If we choose coordinate x0,...,xn on k , now called homogeneous coordi- n nates, we let [x0,...,xn] P denote the line spanned by the vector (x0,...,xn) = n n 2 6 0. Usually, we pick the first embedding of An, and the n remaining points P U0 are the points at infinity. Given a homogeneous − n polynomial f k[x0,...,xn], the sets VP (f)= [a] P f(a)=0 and n 2 { 2 | } DP (f)=P VP (f) can be defined as before, and we again get a topology, called the Zariski topology.− An irreducible closed subset is called a projective variety. These are given by homogeneous prime ideals in k[x0,...,xn] i.e. by prime ideals generated by homogeneous polynomials. An open subset of a projective variety is called quasiprojective. This includes the previous case of affine varieties. n Exercise 12. Check that the map A ⇠= U0 above is a homeomorphism with respect to the Zariski topologies. 4.3 Abstract Algebraic Varieties Classical algebraic geometry was concerned exclusively with quasiprojective va- rieties. But by the mid 20th century, people realized that there were limi- tations with this approach. Various alternatives were proposed by Chevalley, Weil and Zariski, but one that seemed “right” was introduced by Serre in his landmark 1954 paper FAC=“Faiceaux Algebriques Coherents” = “Coherent Al- gebraic Sheaves”. This paved the way for Grothendieck’s theory of schemes a few years later (which we won’t go into). Let X be an affine variety X An. Then it inherits the Zariski topology. This gives a functor from the category⇢ of affine varieties to the category of topological spaces and continuous maps. In! more explicit terms, this means that F is defined by a rational function in the neighbourhood of any point a U. Note that it may be necessary to use di↵erent rational functions at di↵erent2 points. Since the notion of regularity is local in nature, we can see that if set (U)= (U)= regular functions from U k OX O { ! } Proposition 4.3.2. forms a sheaf of rings, called the structure sheaf of X. OX A prevariety over k is a concrete ringed space (X, X ) of k-valued functions which is locally isomorphic to an affine variety. MoreO precisely, we have a finite open cover Ui such that (Ui, X Ui ) is isomorphic to an affine variety. The “pre” is because{ } we are missing aO separation| condition, which plays the role of a Hausdor↵condition. Without getting into details, the additional condition we need for X to be a variety is that the diagonal ∆= (x, x) x X is closed in the suitably defined product X X. The following{ lemma,| proved2 } in chap 1 6 of Mumford’s Red Book, is suffi⇥cient for the examples of interest to us. § Lemma 4.3.3. A prevariety is a variety if and only if for any two points x1,x2, there is an open affine set containing both of them. Example 4.3.4. Let U X be an open subset of an affine variety, then (U, ) ⇢ OU is a variety. If U = A2 0 , this known to be nonaffine. In outline, one checks −{ } 2 that (U) ⇠= k[x, y]. If it was affine, then we would have to have U ⇠= A by duality,O but this is not true. Example 4.3.5. Let X = Pn with its Zariski topology. Given an open U X, ⇢ let X (U) be the algebra generated by rational functions F/G, where f and G areO homogeneous of the same degree and G(a) =0, a U. Using the covering 6 n8 2 Ui introduced earlier, we check that (Ui, ) = (A , ).Wecanassumethat O ⇠ nO i =0, and we have already shown that the U0 ⇠= A as topological spaces, we just have to check that the functions match. For simplicity, we check only that n (A ) = (U0).
