Lille Jean Monnet Conference ‘Regions and regionalism in the European Union’ June 26th, 27th & 28th 2017 LILLIAD Learning center Useful Information Useful information THE CITY OF LILLE The city of Lille is the fourth largest metropolitan area in France after those of Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Lille is si- tuated in French Flanders on the Deûle River near Bel- gium - France border. It is the capital of the Nord-Pas -de-Calais region and it hosts the prefecture of the Nord department. Located only one hour from Paris, 35 minutes from Brus- sels and 80 minutes from London, Lille could live in the shadow of its renowned neighbours. Nonetheless, Lille cultivates its own traditions which are not less eminent than those of the neighbours. Before becoming a French city, Lille has been under Flemish, Burgundian and then Spanish ru- le. Due to its rich history, Lille possesses an outstanding architectural heritage. It was a merchant town in the Middle Age, citadel at the time of Louis XIV, industrial centre in the 19th century and ambitious quickly developing city in the 20th century. Nowadays the city preserves the relics of its past while looking at the future. Lille is a land of exchanges, cros- sing cultures and migrations. Today thanks to its inhabitants Lille has become a meeting point of north European and Mediterranean cultures. Ready to welcome all the cultures, the city has become a true ‘melting pot’. Its rich and bright history has given a strong personality to Lille and its population. GETTING TO LILLE Car & Motorcycle Driving into Lille is incredibly confusing, even with a good map. To get to the city centre, the best thing to do is to suspend your sense of direction and blindly follow the 'Centre Ville' signs. Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt have car-hire offices in Gare Lille-Europe. DLM has an office fa- cing Gare Lille-Flandres. Train Lille's two main train stations, Gare Lille-Flandres and newer Gare Lille-Europe, are 400m apart on the eastern edge of the city centre. They are one stop apart on metro line 2. Gare Lille-Europe | Topped by what looks like a 20-storey ski boot, this ultramodern station han- dles Eurostar trains to London, TGV/Thalys/Eurostar trains to Brussels-Midi, half of the TGVs to Paris Gare du Nord and most province-to-province TGVs. Has a children's playground on the street (upper) level. Gare Lille-Flandres | This old-fashioned station, recently spruced up, is used by half of the TGVs to Paris Gare du Nord and all intra-regional TER services.
