At the entrance to the harbour you will see two statues of deer, Elafos and Elafina, which are symbols of the island. They occupy columns where it is believed that the Colossus of Rhodes once stood. The harbour is also home to three medieval windmills (which ground the grain unloaded from merchant (vessels) and the Public Administration buildings. Your tour will continue to the Monte Smith, the large park where the Acropolis of Rhodes is situated. The tour will then take you into the Old Town of Rhodes, the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. You'll enter the fortified city through the Amboise Gate and walk to the Grand Master Palace, a medieval castle which is one of few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. In front of the steps leading up to the monastery are the remains of a Greek Temple, the cross-shaped baptistery of the first Christian Basilica and the tiny underground Chapel of St. George with faded 15th century wall paintings. Continuing, we drive to Monte Smith once the Acropolis of Ancient Rhodes. From the tumbled massive pillars of the temple of Athena, the stadium of Diagoras and the port. We then driver to Mandraki harbour, viewing the three windmills near St. Nicholas Fort, the new market and the public administration buildings all of which reflect the history of Rhodes Town. We enter the fortified city through the Amboise Gate and walk to the Grand Master Palace.
