RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE 7 DIRECTOR’S NOTE “Careful the tale you tell, that is the spell.” On the first day of rehearsal, Teens on Stage and Teens Backstage participants gathered in a circle and each person identified a story that was important to them. These stories included books that have been read ten times over, bedtime stories told in childhood, respected films, playful graphic novels, and stories enjoyed with family members who are no longer with us. Having filled the space with the memories of our significant stories, we got to work on our production of Into the Woods. In Into the Woods creators Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine challenge what we think we know and invite us to imagine what comes after the happily ever after. As the characters navigate their own self-doubt, tension and trust, and self-discovery they are confronted with complex questions: What do you want, and what would you do to get it? What happens when you actually get what you wish for? What if you don’t even know what you want? Teenagers are uniquely suited as the storytellers for the vehicle containing these wonderings as they experience the intersection of these questions every day. As you encounter this story of wishes and witches along the path we travel here in this theatre, we hope you meet characters you connect with: maybe you’ve wrestled with the same questions, or you identify with their particular plight. Like a magical potion our storytelling will intermingle with the stories you carry with you. —Meredyth Pederson Cooper 8 RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE ORDER OF SONGS ACT I Act One Prologue Cinderella at the Grave Hello, Little Girl I Guess This is Goodbye Maybe They’re Magic I Know Things Now A Very Nice Prince First Midnight Giants in the Sky Agony A Very Nice Prince (Reprise) It Takes Two Second Midnight Stay with Me On the Steps of the Palace Act One Finale (Ever After) ACT II Act Two Opening (So Happy) Agony (Reprise) Witch’s Lament Any Moment Moments in the Woods Your Fault Last Midnight No More No One is Alone Finale RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE 9 Our production of Into the Woods is the culmination of our two teen summer conservatories: TEENS ON STAGE, 19 acting students who attend classes as well as rehearse for the show and TEENS BACKSTAGE, 10 technical theatre students, who as they learned also built and painted the set, hung lights, helped with costumes, sound and props and are serving as Light and Sound Board operators, Assistant Stage Managers, Props Masters and running crew during our production.
