Dear Contents 4 Map of North Somerset’s attractions reader, 6 News update This is the Summer Special edition, highlighting many of the 12 Summer special what’s on guide activities taking place across North Somerset during the next few months. Most of the events are organised by voluntary 14 General events groups who rely on our support as visitors. Please take the time to look through what’s on offer as there is something for 19 Music and theatre events everyone to enjoy this summer. 21 New running festival in Portishead One of the most common complaints we still get is: “Why does the council grant so many planning permissions 23 Uphill to Brean cycle path opens which threaten to overwhelm our local community and environment?” It is frustrating because the council has 24 Walk – Congresbury river and woodland a constant battle with central government and planning inspectors who overturn our decisions. I have mentioned 28 Celebration event at Italian Gardens many times, that while we know we need some new housing for our own growing population, it is nothing like the numbers 37 Tackling anti-social behaviour being forced on us. Following the recent general election, we 42 will have yet another housing minister to try and persuade. Discover North Somerset’s heritage Over the last year we have had the American presidential 47 Contact details election, the European referendum, the French election, local elections and our own general election. Sadly we have also 12 21 seen dreadful terrorist activities in Manchester, London and across Europe. While paying great respect to those who have been so brutally and mindlessly murdered, and to those brave people who constantly risk their lives to keep us safe, we have generally agreed that those responsible for the atrocities cannot be seen to force us to change the way we live. We insist on carrying on our democratic process and the freedom we enjoy and profess to value so much. However at the same time we have allowed our elections, at all levels, to descend to ridicule and unrest. 28 42 Perhaps the best tribute we could pay to those killed and those who protect us, would be to get back to discussing important issues rather than allowing this trend towards constant personal abuse which seems to dominate the press, TV and so called social media. If we really value our democracy, perhaps we should give it more respect ourselves.
