OUT OF MARTIN OF CLERMONT’S GENEALOGIES, VOL. 2d. Leslies of Balquhaine. A very Honourable Family almost always Knights often Shireffs of Aberdeen, and at One Time Three Lesleys were Generals of Armies in 3 Kingdoms, as Walter Count Lesley in Germany, Alexander Lesley Earl of Leven in Scotland and Sir Alexander Lesley of Auchintoul in Muscovy besides many Colonels and other inferior Officers. Lesley of Wardis. Bears Argent on a Bend Azure betwixt Two Laurel Leaves slipped Vert, Three Buckels Or. 1. George Lesley Second Son to Andrew Sixth Lord Lesley and Dowglas Daughter to Lord Dowglas for his good Service to King Robert Bruce in the Wars against King Edward the Second of England and against King Edward Baliol in the Minority of King David Bruce gat from King David Bruce Anno 1340 the Lands of Balwhaine, Syde, Bracaith1 and Knockmalews, Knockblewes or Knockinglews and others in the Garreoche. Of this George Lesley the Houses and Families of Balquhain, Wardis (or Wardhouse), Pitcapil, Kincraigie and Kinninvie are descended. He married Elizabeth Keith Daughter to the Laird of Innerugy, who bare 1 ‘ Braka’interlined. VOL. II. 2 GENEALOGICAL COLLECTIONS [VOL. I to him a Son called Hemline and a Daughter. His Son Hemline succeeded to him. Sir George got from King David Bruce the Lands above named, and died in 1351. 2. Sir Hemline Lesley of Balwhaine succeeded to his Father George Lesley. He married Anna Maxwell Daughter to the Lord Maxwell of Carlaverock, whose Posterity are Earl of Niddisdale. She bare a Son Andrew and 2 Daughters Lesleys. Lesley Daughter to Sir Hemline Lesley of Balwhaine was Lady of Baldathash. 3. Sir Andrew Lesley Son to Sir Hemline Lesley of Bal- whaine succeeded to his Father. He married Helen (Isobell) Mortimer Daughter to Bernard Mortimer of Craigievar. She bare a Son William and 4 Daughters, Margaret, and Lesleys. He was slaine at Brakah by the Shirreff of Angus 22 January 1420, whereupon his Lady founded a Chaplainry where he lies. [page 313.'] This Sir Andrew Lesley of Balquhaine was Master of Horses to Alexander Stewart Earl of Marr, and was One of his chief Captains at the Battle of Harlaw in Anno 1411, who loved him, and gave the Lands of Ludlaw to maintain a Chaplain at the Chappel of Garrioch to pray for this Sir Andrew perpetually. It is said That he had Seventy Children. But most of them were unlawfully begotten. It is reported That in One Night he begot Seven Children in sundry Places, and That all their Mothers lay in Child Bed at One Time, and That his Lady sent to every One of them in Charity Half a Boll of Meal, Half a Boll of Malt, a Wedder and Five Shillings of Money. At the Battle of Harlaw Eleven of his Sons were killed at Lesleys Croce. Other Thirteen Sons who were left at Banochie seeing the Battle joined out of Love to their Father, and at his Lady’s Perswasion went to the Battle, and were all slain. The Occasion of his going to Banochie was a Discord betwixt him and Sir John Forbes of Druminer Predecessor to the Lord Forbes, which occasioned the Earl of Mar to be offended with him, whereupon he went to Banochie a high Mountain near his House of Balwhaine, and fortified it, and staid till his Peace was made. Yea, and after both he and his Successors fortified it, and dwelt in it. While he staid at pp. 312-3x4] THE LESLIES 3 Banochy, he 'went to Stradone (Strathdoun), and spuilzied these Lands, and brought away with him a Heirship and also a Daughter to the Baron of Cray of Enivarvine (Innervin) Chief of the Clan Allan. She was called the fair Maid of Stradone. He kept her many Years in Banochie, and begot on her Malcolm, to whom his Father gave the Lands of Cults. Malcolm Lesley Bastard Son to Sir Andrew Lesley of Balwhaine got from his Father the Lands of Cults. He married She bare Two Sons, Sir Andrew and Alexander Lesleys. Sir Andrew Lesley eldest Son to Malcolm Lesley of Cults was Parson of Flisk. He married not, but had a Daughter a Bastard called Marjory. She married John Gordon of Essie. She bare many Sons, viz. Alexander Gordon Predecessor to Gordon of Carnburron and Brockie, Duncan of Knoven, William at the Budge of Gight, Alexander of Cracallie and Crimond.
