Brown University Design & Construction Standards Department of Facilities Management 32 13 14 Concrete Paving with Exposed Aggregate SECTION 32 13 14: CONCRETE PAVING WITH EXPOSED AGGREGATE 1. GENERAL A. The intent is to establish consistent paving for all primary campus walkways e.g. the Walk and the athletics complex pedestrian pathways. Provide a 2’x2’ sample for review. B. Exposed Aggregate: 1. Selected, hard, and durable; washed; free of materials with deleterious reactivity to cement or that cause staining. 2. From a single source, with gapgraded coarse aggregate to be 3/8” crushed bluestone. C. Pigment: 1. Tint used for the Walk is Scofield C-24 Charcoal Gray. 2. Provide sample to match D. Finishing: Provide exposed aggregate finish by sample review and mockup approval for one of the following methods as determined by architect: 1. Monolithic Exposed Aggregate Finish: Expose coarse aggregate in pavement surfaces as follows: i. Immediately after float finishing, spray-apply chemical surface retarder to pavement according to manufacturer's written instructions. ii. Cover pavement surface with plastic sheeting, sealing laps with tape, and remove when ready to continue finishing operations. iii. Without dislodging aggregate, remove excess mortar by lightly brushing surface with a stiff, nylon-bristle broom. iv. Fine-spray surface with water and brush. Repeat water flushing and brushing cycle until cement film is removed from aggregate surfaces to depth required. 2. Seeded Exposed Aggregate Finish: i. Immediately after initial floating, spread a single layer of aggregate uniformly on pavement surface. ii. Tamp aggregate into plastic concrete, and float finish to entirely embed aggregate with mortar cover of 1/16 inch. iii. Without dislodging aggregate, remove excess mortar by lightly brushing surface with a stiff, nylon-bristle broom. iv. Fine-spray surface with water and brush. Repeat water flushing and brushing cycle until cement film is removed from aggregate surfaces to depth required. September 1, 2012 Page 1 of 1 .
