While planting progress has only just begun, we do have rice emerged. With that in mind, the DD50 Rice Management Program is live and ready for fields to be enrolled for the 2020 season. All log-in and producer information has been retained from the 2019 season, so if you used the program last year you can log-in just as you did last year. Only field data from 2019 has been removed. New Handbook!!! Furrow-irrigated rice has been gaining ground, increasing from less than 1 percent to 10 percent of total rice acreage in Arkansas in the past five years. A new handbook from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture provides rice growers with the latest research and recommendations for furrow-irrigated rice. The “Arkansas Furrow- Irrigated Rice Handbook” provides research-based information about selecting cultivars, establishing stands, and managing fertility, weeds, disease, insects and irrigation. It also provides information about budgeting and crop insurance, which became available for furrow- irrigated rice earlier this year through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency. The publication is available on the Cooperative Extension Service website at https://bit.ly/ArkRiceHandbook. Weekly Rice Updates Arkansas Rice Updates are published periodically to provide timely information and recommendations for rice production in Arkansas. If you would like to be added to this email list, please send your request to [email protected]. This information will also be posted to the Arkansas Row Crops blog (http://www.arkansascrops.com/) where additional information from Extension specialists can be found. More information on rice production, including access to all publications and reports, can be found at http://www.uaex.edu/rice. JUNE 2 0 2 0 SOYBEAN Potassium Deficiency Tissue Sampling If you see the symptoms of potassium deficiency or are concerned about the potential for hidden hunger, tissue testing can be a useful tool to help identify this and make corrective measures to maximize yield potential in soybean. Researchers with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture have worked to develop critical potassium tissue concentrations across a wide range of growth stages. What this allows us to do is to match up the growth stage and the tissue concentration to determine whether or not corrective potassium applications will be economically beneficial. Tissue sampling includes the collection of a specific plant part which is then sent to a lab for analysis to identify the tissue concentration. That tissue concentration, with the growth stage, can be used to correctly identify potential potassium deficiencies.
