WHEREAS, it is fitting that this General Assembly should pause to honor and specially commend those distinguished organizations whose stated goals advance the most noble precepts of human endeavors and whose history of service, in pursuit of those goals, is an outstanding example to the citizens of this great state; and WHEREAS, fraternities and sororities have played a significant role in American college life since 1776 and, as adult members, have been major contributors to the cultural, social, and civic lives of their communities; and WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., is an outstanding example of the Greek system at work and is an organization with a long tradition of excellence; and WHEREAS, founded in 1913 by twenty-two students from Howard University, and in 2013 having celebrated its 1oath anniversary, this distinguished sisterhood consists of more than 300,000 women with more than 950 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and · WHEREAS, these highly accomplished women use their collective strength to foster economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement; and WHEREAS, on February 10-12, 2014, the respected members of Delta Sigma Theta in Tennessee will gather for Delta Days on Capitol Hill. During which time, these incredible women will attend various informative cluster workshops, the Lois DeBerry Servant Leader Awards Luncheon, selected committee meetings, and visit their legislators to promote Delta's agenda; and WHEREAS, the dedicated participants will be guided by the astute leadership of Cheryl Turner, Southern Regional Director; Manica Pierrette, Southern Regional Representative; State Representative Brenda Gilmore, Tennessee State Social Action Coordinator and the 2014 Chair of Tennessee Delta Days at the Capitol; Sandra Canon, Tennessee State Coordinator; and Cicely Rivers, Tennessee State Facilitator; and WHEREAS, the women of Delta Sigma Theta are wholly committed to the noble precepts of public service that have earned Tennessee recognition as the "Volunteer State." As ambassadors of those very precepts, whether they are Tennesseans or honorary Tennesseans, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority should be specially recognized; now, therefore, HJR 643 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, that we commend the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their exemplary service to their respective communities and welcome them to Nashville on February 10-12, 2014, in honor of their Delta Days at the State Capitol.
