Health Hazard Information Acute Health Effects The following acute (short-term) health effects may occur immediately or shortly after exposure to Magnesium Nitrate: f Contact can irritate and burn the skin and eyes. f Inhaling Magnesium Nitrate can irritate the nose and throat causing sore throat, coughing and wheezing. f High levels of this substance can reduce the blood’s ability to transport Oxygen, causing headache, fatigue, dizziness, and a blue color to the skin and lips (methemoglobinemia). Exposure to very high levels can cause trouble breathing, collapse and even death. Chronic Health Effects The following chronic (long-term) health effects can occur at some time after exposure to Magnesium Nitrate and can last for months or years: Cancer Hazard f According to the information presently available to the New Jersey Department of Health, Magnesium Nitrate has not been tested for its ability to cause cancer in animals.
