Warwickshire Local History Society Outings 2020 Saturday 9th May, 2020. St Leonard’s Church, Over Whitacre and St John the Baptist’s Church, Lea Marston Meet at 2 pm at the Georgian St Leonard’s Church, Nuneaton Road, Over Whitacre, B46 2NG. The present church, in the Baroque style, was built in 1765 but a chapel has existed in Over Whitacre from as early as 1203. Rita Poulson will give us the history of this beautiful chapel on a hill, as well as bringing to life the many characters connected with the church during its history. A short car journey will take us to Lea Marston where we will learn about St John the Baptist Church, Church Lane, Lea Marston, B46 1GA. This church is very different in style and was the Estate Church for the nearby Hams Hall Estate, belonging to the Adderley family. We finish our outing with a full afternoon tea. Car parking available at both sites. Disabled access. Some time spent outside in churchyards with uneven ground; wear appropriate footwear. Number of places: 40; Lunch suggestion: The Gate Inn, Nether Whitacre, B46 2DS, 01675 481292 Saturday 13th June, 2020. Henley-in-Arden Guildhall, Heritage Centre and Town. Meet at 2pm. Free Parking at the Medical Centre car park, Prince Harry Road, Henley-In-Arden B95 5GD. Meet at The Guildhall, High Street, Henley, B95 5AU, where Dr Nat Alcock will introduce us to this beautiful 15th Century building and give a brief overview of its history. Nat will lead a walking tour along Henley’s historic High Street, including St John’s Church. Then a guided visit to the nearby Heritage Centre which charts the history of the town from the Norman Conquest to the present day. Exhibits include a replica Anderson bomb shelter, source material related to the early development of the town and Beaudesert castle, and a Victorian/Edwardian Collection. Tea and a slice of cake will be served. Stair lift but no wheelchair access at the Guildhall. The High Street walk is flat but with some uneven paving stones (wear appropriate footwear) and about 1 mile in length. Wheelchair entrance at the Heritage Centre but no lift upstairs. Number of places: 30. Lunch suggestion: The Nag’s Head, 161 High Street, Henley, B95 5BA, 01564 Saturday 18th July, 2020. Napton on the Hill: St Lawrence’s Church and village. Meet at 2 pm at St Lawrence’s Church, Church Road, Napton on the Hill, CV47 8FL, where Monica Evans talks to us about the history of this church, which was built in the 13th century but has seen many alterations since, particularly in Victorian times. Bernard Alsop will lead us on a History Walk around the village, starting with the World War 2 Observer Post, from which Napton Windmill (now a private residence), the canal, and countryside as far as Coventry can clearly be seen. The walk will take in landmarks such as the old pound, pillory green, old bakery, pub and memorial trees. We will finish at Napton Village Hall, The Crescent, Napton, CV47 8LS, for a full afternoon tea. Wear sturdy shoes or walking boots as the first part of the walk takes place along footpaths (no stiles) and is steep. Parking is available at the church and at the Village Hall. People with mobility needs will struggle with the walk but they could come to the church and then rejoin us at the Village Hall. Number of places: 30. The Bagot’s Castle archaeologist will take us on a tour of this 14th century castle which now stands in ruins. The original building is believed to have been constructed on the site in the 11th century, at the time of King Henry I. It was rebuilt as the current castle in the late 14th century by Sir William Bagot, a distinguished nobleman. There are uneven, grassy, muddy footpaths so wear appropriate footwear.
