SCULPTURAL TOOLS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS Sculpture tools are instruments which one holds in his or her hand to produce sculptural art work. 1. Adze: It is almost like a small hoe with an angular and strong metal structure. It is used for chipping large portions of the wood when carving. 2. Axe: An iron head and wooden handle tool used to cut down trees and some wood into piece before carving. 3. Calipers: An instrument shaped like scissors made from wood, metal or plastic. It is used to measure size and distance when modeling. 4. Burning Rod: A sharp pointed rod with wooden handle used by craft men. It is used with red hot to create designs on leather calabash or wood. It could be used to bore holes on such crafts. 5. Chisels: It is a sharp, strong and flattened metal with either wooden or iron handle, used along with mallet for carving objects or figures from wood. It is also used to create a design on carved door post or other house furniture. 6. Angles: These are also sharp metal usually with wooden handle for chipping out wood. They are of different shapes and sizes e.g. U, V, C. 7. Harmer: Most with wooden handle and iron head. Its uses are many, among which are to nail two pieces of wood together. 8. Mallet: Wooden or rubber harmer used along with chisel and guage for chipping and carving furniture. 9. Sharpening Stone: A rectangular block hard stone fixed into wooden case with a cover to protect the stone. It is used for sharpening carving tools generally e.g. chisel, gauges etc. 10. Hand Saw: A tool with a long handle and broad blade with curve edges used for moving earth, stone, sand. 11. Nail: A small thin pointed piece of metal with a flat head used for hanging things on a wall or for joining pieces of wood together.
