Year 4 Timetable 22Nd April 2020 Reading Mission: 30 Minutes

Year 4 Timetable 22nd April 2020 Reading Mission: Children to read or support them to read the following text. 30 minutes Three thousand years ago, there was a place called Assyria. Today, this is in modern-day Iran. In Assyria, there was a goddess of love and the sea called Atargatis. She was known to be incredibly beautiful, so beautiful that doves would break into song whenever she walked by. Kings and princes from many places would try and catch her attention, but the goddess paid them no mind. She had fallen in love with one man and one man only; a poor shepherd named Hadad. Even though he had no money, she was drawn to him by his kindness and caring attitude. They lived happily together in the hills near the ocean, where Atargatis’ happy face shone with a light more lovely than the most wonderful sunset. Together they had a daughter, who was as beautiful as her mother and she brought lots of joy to their lives. However, it was not to last. Atargatis was a goddess, and Hadad was a mortal man. Although Atargatis was goddess of love, and love they had, she was also goddess of the sea and did not need to breathe like we do. One night, just like any other, she kissed Hadad before they went to sleep. But she was overwhelmed with love for him, and kissed him too long; Hadad ran out of breath and collapsed! Distraught, Atargatis did everything she could to return the breath to his body, but it was no use. Hadad was gone. Mad with grief and guilt, Atargatis was not thinking clearly. She abandoned her crying daughter in her cot, and walked to the top of the cliffs over the sea. Without pause, she hurled herself into the fierce waves below. As she sank below the surface, she began to transform into a fish. However, her radiant beauty could not be covered up and only her bottom half became like a fish, leaving her top half as a woman. Thus Atargatis became the first mermaid. Don’t worry for their daughter! She was brought food by the doves that had loved her mother, and was eventually found by the king’s own shepherd. Eventually she would become a respected and powerful queen of Assyria. After they can answer these questions. These can be verbal answers or they could be written down or typed. Children could even draw their responses. Suggested answers are in italics. How long ago is this story set? Three thousand years ago. What was Atargatis the goddess of? Love and the sea. Writing Mission: You should now have a map to your treasure and understand how to 30 minutes get past all of the obstacles and find it. The next step will vary depending on the mission you have chosen. If you are writing instructions, you can choose some fronted adverbials and begin! Remember you should have an introduction, what they will need to succeed, and the steps to follow. As a challenge you could describe back-up plans if instructions fail or alternative ways around an obstacle. If you are writing a story, you could now plan your characters and decide why they will be looking for the treasure. If you are writing the newspaper report you could begin splitting your paper into columns with a ruler and choosing where you might like to draw a picture for your report, and make up some extra facts to include. It could look like this: This example is included at the end of the timetable if you would like to use it.
