AThat sealed it for me. He=s probably the nicest-looking young colt in the sale. He=s got a great shoulder and hip. He might go as far as a mile. He needs to grow a little bit, but he=s got all the goods. He=s very well bred so he meets all the criteria that I set out for acquisitions. I=m very pleased to buy him.@ Kelly, who is involved in media, banking and real estate businesses, said he thought the colt was good value considering what a horse of his type and pedigree might have brought at other sales rings around the world. The result was a homerun for John Kelly of Newhaven Park, who bred and raised the colt with his father and brother, Charlie, on their New South Wales farm. AHe was very popular and he presented himself very well,@ Kelly noted. AHe didn=t put a foot out of place all week, and I suppose if you=re going to get A$1 million for a horse, that=s what they need to do. I don=t think I had anyone who really canned him all week, which is really difficult at a yearling sale. It=s very hard to have the horse that everyone likes.@ AHe was spectacular, because he had an enormous amount of parades,@ Kelly added. AOne day he did about 150 parades, and he just took it in his stride. And he thrived while he was here. We were actually concerned he was starting to do a bit too well, that=s how well he coped with it.@ The 8-year-old Hades= first foal, also a colt by Redoute=s Choice, was hammered down to David Ingordo here last year for A$460,000 on behalf of Paul Fudge=s Waratah Thoroughbreds. Now named The Iliad (Aus) and in training with Peter Moody in Sydney, he won a Randwick barrier trial in late November. Kelly noted that Hades has a filly by Redoute=s Choice at foot, and is back in foal to Arrowfield=s Champion Sire. AIt is very unusual for us to go four years in a row [to the same stallion], but they=re just magnificent individuals, so we just keep backing up,@ Kelly explained, adding: AI always had a sneaking suspicion that this bloke was a little better than his brother.@ Kelly has been at the helm of Newhaven Park with his father and brother for about 20 years, and the trio currently own about 60 broodmares. Kelly expressed his satisfaction with the market at Magic Millions. AThe sale is terrific,@ he said. AAny sale that=s clearing nearly 90% is good. The average is a little better than last year, so you can=t ask for more. Any market where you can sell an A$1 million horse and an A$60,000 horse and anywhere in between, it=s a good market.
