Biographical Note Robert Guillaume (b. 1927) is an American television and stage actor best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Benson Du Bois on the television series Soap and its spin-off Benson. In 1985 he became the first African American to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Comedy Actor. Guillaume has also had a distinguished stage career, with roles in Guys and Dolls, Porgy and Bess and the Phantom of the Opera. From 1998-2000, Guillaume also appeared in the short-lived but critically acclaimed TV series Sports Night.
