This year’s theme is “Partnerships and Collaborations.” According to Merriam-Webster, one definition of “collaborate” is to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor. Field station personnel already know this. OBFS members are incredibly creative and dedicated collaborators. While field stations comprise a range of sizes, biomes, and histories, all serve as crucibles of collaborative learning. The National Academy of Sciences reported in 2014 that field stations play important roles in facilitating partnerships, including: 1. Observation of environmental change 2. Training the next generation of scientists, educators and natural resource professionals 3. Engaging the public in science and discovery of the natural world 4. Space to test new technologies and methods All of those activities are enabled by field station directors, managers, site coordinators, and staff – in short, each of you who devote your energies and passion toward teaching, discovering and facilitating science and increasingly arts and humanities. I encourage you to cultivate that passion by going just one step further. In this time of rapid social and environmental change, the need for collaboration is ever greater. Merriam-Webster goes on to define “collaborate” this way: to cooperate with an agency or instrumentality with which one is not immediately connected. Following the theme of our meeting, what new relationships can be forged in your sphere of influence? At this year’s annual meeting, there are many opportunities for sharing your good works with the OBFS community and beyond: Engage new ideas, such as those in Plenary #2 titled “Answering community-driven questions and making science accessible through collaborative research” or in several Concurrent Sessions Reach out to a local school and invite the teachers and students to visit your facility (see workshop #4, STEM Outreach for Diverse Audiences) Invite your political representatives to your field station (talk to Committee Chair, Lisa Busch, about AIBS- facilitated training) Foster art-science collaborations – for instance, Plenary #3 focuses on visualization storytelling Mentor an early-career educator or researcher (see Venetia Lyles, Member-at-Large Early Career Representative) Brainstorm how your data can “talk” to new audiences (EDI workshop #3) These are just a few ideas for you to share these activities with your home institutions, colleagues, and neighbors. The OBFS listserv, social media and website are also great platforms for collaboration. Please help me extend our appreciation to the wonderful hosts at the Schoodic Institute and enjoy the meeting!
