The Proclamation was issued by President George W. Bush on June 6, 2006. Since the declaration, the White House has issued an annual proclamation recognizing June as Caribbean-American Heritage Month. This year marks the fourteenth celebration of June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month. This year's theme is Our Shared History, Our Shared Future. The commemoration of Caribbean American Heritage Month aims to remind Americans that our greatness lies in our diversity. Caribbean immigrants from founding father, Alexander Hamilton, to journalist, Malcolm Gladwell, have helped to shape the American dream. Writer’s Corner From The Beautiful Island of Jamaica I decided to follow my parents who had migrated to the US a few years earlier. I arrived at Kennedy Airport in the spring of 1970. I remember watching TV “Watergate” day after day. My cousin Roy who lived in the Bronx with his family had been in the US as a child. So he took us around. We went to Orchard Beach early on Saturday morning. We would spend about two hours, It was lovely. My cousin Roy was a member of the Wembley Cricket Club. Roy would take us, my sisters and brothers to the matches. These are some of the things we enjoyed back home. Of course we would take sandwiches and cool drinks. We would travel to different places to watch the match. -Rema Sherwood Jamaica is an island situated in the Caribbean. It’s the second largest of the Caribbean Islands. Jamaicans are a mix- ture of Africans, Europeans, East Indians, Chinese and Middle Eastern, hence our Motto is “Out of Many One”. Native Jamaicans are called Arawak’s Indians who came from South American over 2,000 years ago and named the island Xaymaca which means land of wood and water. Jamaica was a British Colony from 1707 until 1962 when it gained its independence from England. In the 1960’s many Jamaican families migrated to the United States for different reasons. Each year thousands of Jamaicans return home for vacation and family visits.
