PORTRAIT | FIGURE Honorable Mention Stephanie Deshpande Glen Ridge, New Jersey www.stephaniedeshpande.com Using a predominantly warm palette and closely related values in The Fall was a choice Stephanie Deshpande made to “up” the the- matic intensity but also to establish the figure as having an equal part in the narrative as the child’s toys. The young girl in the painting is Deshpande’s daughter. It’s an intimate scene Deshpande imagined one day in the car, but it’s also slightly sinister, made all the more so by Deshpande’s other inspiration for the painting—a nightmare in which she witnessed a child falling to the ground (that child is rep- resented by Raggedy Andy). “I’m an impulsive painter,” says Deshpande. “Once I have an idea in mind, it’ll only take me a few hours to complete the underpainting.” D eshpande says she’s grateful for a class ABOVE: The Fall (oil First, though, she sketches the initial drawing she recently took with The Artist’s Magazine’s on linen, 16x20) in pencil onto the canvas. She then paints the featured artist Max Ginsburg at The Art midtones and shadows, before blocking in the Students League of New York, and hopes to main colors. continue learning there. n Finalists Liz Adams-Jones Lei Chi Zoey Frank Gaetanne Lavoie Pamela Nichols Roger Schmidt Cecilia Thorell Brooklyn, N.Y.
