Introduction: This week-long seminar will examine jazz and related styles as sites of negotiating race and nationhood in the American public sphere. Jazz was derived from African American musical forms in the period of slavery – including spirituals, blues, and minstrelsy shows – before emerging as a new hybrid in New Orleans at the turn of the twentieth century and then developing into swing, bebop, and beyond. Both derided and applauded at various points throughout the 1900s, jazz consistently provided a forum for a racial minority to be heard and created a space for interaction among for black and white musicians and audiences. This course will survey the critical position that jazz has played in the construction of American identity, using our location in New Orleans to immerse students in a cultural study of American history. More than the birthplace of jazz, the Crescent City also helped nurture subsequent musical styles, including swing, bebop, R&B, and New Orleans’s own distinctive contribution to hip- hop—bounce.
