It was shown that there was intense coal mining activity in the area from the 17th to the mid 20th century. The assessment also indicated medieval sites of archaeological importance close to the study area. Several hedgerows were taken into consideration at the site. The setting of the Grade II Listed farmhouse was also considered, although its setting had already been affected. There were also thought to be early post- medieval buildings preserved at the site. There was some evidence for Roman remains and the possibility of medieval archaeology, however, it was thought that tree planting in the 19th century would have truncated any archaeological deposits. [Au(abr)] 1/559 (B.79.N002) ST 63957795 BS16 1PH LAND AT "THE HOMESTEAD", FRENCHAY Land at "The Homestead", No 2 Homestead Gardens, Frenchay, South Gloucestershire Longman, T Bristol : Bristol & Region Archaeological Services, 2003, 22pp, pls, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Bristol and Region Archaeological Services An assessment was carried out in advance of building proposals on this part of the land. The study found that a short section of ha ha survived, that the gardener's house was the former farmhouse and the gazebo was in fairly good condition. No other 19th century or earlier remains were present. A possibility of prehistoric activity was present, and a previous geophysical survey identified anomalies associated with boundaries and plough marks. The farm itself was thought to be of 16th century origin. Archaeological Desktop Study Erskine, J Bristol : Avon Archaeological Unit, 2003, 30pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Avon Archaeological Unit An area of earthworks, some 2.5 ha in extent, located south of Knole Park, a presumed Iron Age Hill Fort, had been noted adjacent to a significant field name, Brick Hill. This area required further investigation. The strip of high ground which, would, in the main, be destroyed has the potential for survival of prehistoric material which cannot be located in this exercise. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: IA 1/562 (B.79.N003) ST 88256702 GL12 8QB THE MANOR HOUSE, TYTHERINGTON The Manor House, Tytherington, South Gloucestershire Watkins, K Bath : Bath Archaeological Trust, 2003, 21pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Bath Archaeological Trust The study area was located close to the heart of a known medieval settlement, and a monastic Grange was also established here by the late 14th century. Medieval deposits were thought likely, perhaps comprising a moat or pond. Another pond in the area was thought to relate to post-medieval industry, perhaps related to the wool trade.
