For most the focus is on preparation for adult life. Learning could become more vocational, helping young people identify opportunities for potential employment in the future, and enabling them to develop the skills they will need to be successful. For some the focus will be on improving communication and independent living skills. Most college courses are 3 days per week and other learning programmes are usually 3 or 4 days giving young people time for other activities, outside of education, which could continue into adult life. York Local Offer Information about preparing for adulthood can be found on the Local Offer website: www.yor-ok.org.uk/preparing-for-adulthood Opportunities for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) in York now include: • Local Colleges • Applefields Post 16 Provision • Archbishop Holgate’s Sixth Form • Personalised Learning Programmes • Supported Internships • Activities in York – Preparing for Adulthood Specialist Careers Advisers offer advice and guidance to help prepare young people with EHCPs to make choices. We begin by meeting young people and finding out about their aims, hopes and ambitions. We will work alongside families, teaching staff and others who support young people including social workers and health professionals. Students will also have the opportunity to attend open events and taster sessions to support their decision making. Young people with EHCPs may need longer in education or training to support their successful transition into adulthood. Their EHCP can therefore continue whilst they are still in education (including apprenticeships and supported internships). Please note that at the time of going to press the coronavirus pandemic was still impacting education and leisure provision. Some of the content provided in this booklet may be subject to change. Please contact individual providers direct for up to date information. 3 | What’s next? 2020-2021 Local Further Education in York York College A further education and higher education college, with a music development centre, sports development centre, construction and engineering workshops, science labs, a theatre, a restaurant, and a hair and beauty salon.
