LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the United States Olympians, and particularly the New Yorkers, who competed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games held February 12-28, 2010 WHEREAS, The Olympic Movement follows from a set of core Olympic Values: the search for excellence; fair play; the joy in effort; respect for others; and harmony between body, mind, and will; and WHEREAS, The Olympic Games have been a catalyst for peace, and more than 200 countries are represented in the Olympics with over 10,000 athletes competing; and WHEREAS, The young men and women of the United States selected to participate in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics have worked for many years for this opportunity to honor our Nation through their dedication and patriotism; and WHEREAS, The 2010 United States Olympic team members have achieved great success in their chosen sports and have served as inspirational role models for the Nation; and WHEREAS, Lowell Bailey of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Biathalon; and WHEREAS, Dustin Brown of New York, New York, was chosen for the United States Hockey Team and won a Silver Medal; and WHEREAS, Tim Burke of Paul Smiths, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Biathlon; and WHEREAS, Ryan Callahan of Rochester, New York, was chosen for the United States Hockey Team and won a Silver Medal; and WHEREAS, Annelies Cook of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Biathlon; and WHEREAS, Julia Clukey of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Luge; and WHEREAS, Caitlin Compton of New York, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in Cross-Country Skiing; and WHEREAS, John Daly of Smithtown, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Bobsled; and WHEREAS, Bill Demong of Vermontville, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Nordic Combined and won a Gold Medal and a Silver Medal; and WHEREAS, Matthew De Peters of Buffalo, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in Freestyle Skiing; and WHEREAS, Peter Frenette of Saranac Lake, New York, was chosen for the United States Ski Jumping Team; and WHEREAS, Mark Grimmette of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Luge; and WHEREAS, Erin Hamlin of Remsen, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Luge; and WHEREAS, Anders Johnson of Plattsburgh, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in Ski Jumping; and WHEREAS, Haley Johnson of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Biathlon; and WHEREAS, Dan Joye of Carmel, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Luge; and WHEREAS, Patrick Kane of Buffalo, New York, was chosen for the United States Hockey Team and won a Silver Medal; and WHEREAS, Trevor Marsicano of Ballston Spa, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in Speed Skating; and WHEREAS, Chris Mazdzer of Saranac Lake, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Luge; and WHEREAS, Steve Mesler of Buffalo, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Bobsled and won a Gold Medal; and WHEREAS, Ryan Miller of Buffalo, New York, was chosen for the United States Hockey Team and won a Silver Medal; and WHEREAS, John Napier of Schenectady, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Bobsled; and WHEREAS, Sara Studebaker of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in the Biathlon; and WHEREAS, Bengt Walden of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to repre- sent the United States in the Luge; and WHEREAS, Andrew Weibrecht of Lake Placid, New York, was chosen to represent the United States in Alpine Skiing and won a Bronze Medal; and WHEREAS, New York has been the birthplace or home of hundreds of Olym- pians including more than 300 Olympic athletes born in New York City; and WHEREAS, The year 2010 is the 30th Anniversary of New York's Olympics in Lake Placid, site of the "Miracle on Ice"; and WHEREAS, The 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid was the second time the Olympic Winter Games were held in Lake Placid, New York; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate the New Yorkers chosen to represent the United States and the great State of New York in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancou- ver, British Columbia, Canada, and to thank New York's young athletes for once again showing this great Empire State's character, diversity, energy and unbeatable human spirit to the world; and be it further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to the aforementioned Olympians..
