HIGH SOUTH SYDNEY SCHOOL Care | Opportunity | Success Newsletter | Term 2 Week 10 | 5 July 2019 Principal’s Report Congratulations to: The Year 7 and Year 8 students who presented their “Videos for Social Change” in Week 9. Many thanks to the parents and carers who came to watch and hear from the students. Our Aboriginal students who were actively involved in leading, chairing, speaking and dancing at the NAIDOC Assembly held on Thursday. Many thanks to Emily Cooley and Jenny Wilson, for coordinating this very important assembly. The AFL Team who are the Sydney Metropolitan Runners Up after hard fought wins over Caringbah and Kingsgrove High School. Our Year 10 students and parents who attended the subject selection night held in Week 9. Mr Wiseman presented some very important information about Year 11 subjects 2020 and many parents and students were able to discuss subjects on offer with teachers and Head Teachers. This is a very exciting time for our Year 10 students when they access subjects of their own choice for the HSC. CAPA Showcase I totally enjoyed my first South Sydney High School CAPA Showcase. On Tuesday 2nd July the audience listened to a wonderful array of talented performances and were able to view student art works and pottery. Thank you to Ms Gregov, Ms Sainty, Ms De Paor, Ms Healy, Mr Spencer and Mr Baggaley for all their support and encouragement to students to produce work and perform to a very high standard. The students clearly enjoyed the opportunity to perform and showcase their achievements. Many thanks to the South Sydney High School community for supporting this excellent showcase of work; teachers who assisted with supervision; Ms Douglas for her overall organisation of the night, Karen Brookes and Michelle Hasking for all their catering efforts and all teachers who volunteered their time and assisted with supervision and other duties. Business Partnership Committee Ms Stell chaired another very successful Business Partnership Committee last week. One the most significant and enjoyable section of the meeting is to hear from our students. Luti who opened with the Acknowledge- ment to Country. Lilou, Stefano, Chris and Jessica gave an excellent overview of their experiences with the myriad of excursions they have participated in. It is wonderful to see United Way, Kellogg’s and T. Rowe Price continue their strong commitment to the students at South Sydney High School and we are looking forward to bringing more businesses into our learning community. Catalyst Lab Boot Camp South Sydney High School is one of ten teams to get through to the third round of the Catalyst Lab. The Catalyst Lab is a DoE program looking at how teaching will look in the Future. They are working on Artificial Intelligence with regard to educating student awareness about the implications and ethical issues while equipping them to make critical and creative thinking decisions as they become global citizens. Mr Chadwick, Ms Khouri and Ms Douglas form the South Sydney High School team and have been on a three day Boot Camp at Parramatta this week. We look forward to following their journey with this innovative program. Multicultural Flag Day on Friday 2ND August I would like to encourage as many parents as possible to put this date into your diary. This day reminds us about the wonderful cultural richness which exists within our school and the wider community. I would encourage as many students to participate in this great celebration of cultural diversity. Staffing Update I am pleased to announce that Kristy Khouri has been appointed permanently to South Sydney High School in the English Department. We are lucky to have such a passionate, enthusiastic and talented staff member join the South Sydney High School Community. EDROLO South Sydney High School will be trialling Edrolo for Year 11 and Year 12 students. Edrolo is an exciting addition to our HSC resourcing. It is a comprehensive online interactive platform that provides videos, exam practice and sample answers. Students and teachers will be formally trained early next term. Edrolo is easily accessed by logging onto the Edrolo website. Students can access Edrolo anywhere there is internet connection using their choice of device. Goodbye Term 2 As my first term at South Sydney High School draws to a close and I would like to acknowledge the hard work and commitment shown by so many South Sydney High School students. Congratulations to all students who have tried their hardest to achieve their personal best. It has been a very busy but rewarding term and I would like to thank all teachers and administration staff for their hard work dedication and support of me in my first term at this wonderful school. I hope to see you for Parent Teacher Night on Tuesday 30th for Years 7 and 9, from 4.00 pm – 7.30 pm. I wish all staff and students a well-earned break. Kind Regards Janice Neilsen Principal Library News As the weather is getting colder, it is a perfect time for curling up with a book these school holidays. The Library has a range of new resources, both fiction and non-fiction. Make sure to borrow and stock up your reading material over the holidays. Of course, you can access and borrow from the eBook and audiobook collection anytime. Don’t forget to log your books for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. The challenge will conclude in the middle of term 3. Students who complete the PRC will be able to have exclusive access to the Library one lunchtime during Book Week. The Library has a variety of lunchtime activities planned during Book Week to complement the theme “Reading is my secret power”. Stay tuned. Julie Maddocks, Teacher Librarian Sport News Term, Week 10 AFL Success continues On Tuesday 2nd July the Boys AFL team travelled out to Sutherland to compete in the Final 4 Tournament of the Sydney East 15Yrs AFL Championship. The format involved two semi-final matches with each winner progressing onto the final to compete for the Sydney East Region place in the State Championships. In the first game South Sydney High School had a comprehensive win over Kingsgrove High School who have previously been successful in this tournament. This resulted in a grand final match against Sydney Secondary College. The match was a hard fought and closely contested affair. Eventually Sydney Secondary College emerged victorious with a 37-22 win. Well done to all of the boys who represented the school as a part of this team. Second place in the region is a great achievement! Congratulations Rose During week 9, Rose of Year 12 (Pictured) represented the school and the Sydney East Region at the NSW Combined High Schools Girls Touch Football Selection Trials which were held in Wollongong. This is the third year that Rose has been a part of this team. Over that time she has become not just an ever-reliable player on the field, but also a wonderful leader for younger members of the team off the field. Rose has done an excellent job maintaining her involvement and commitment to school sport as she juggles the demands and pressures of Year 12. She is an excellent role model to the girls in the junior year groups. Well done Rose. CAPA Showcase. Years 9, 10 & 11. Music, Drama & Visual Arts Hidden Talent! Once again our school community was treated to an amazing show on Tuesday evening, 2nd of July. CAPA elective students presented an entertaining program of Music, Drama & Visual Arts. It is always great to see the hidden talents displayed on stage with confidence. The professionalism and collegiality backstage is a credit to all students and their teachers. Many of the students also had artwork on display, showing off their diverse talents. Once more a considerable effort was put into preparing the students by Ms Gregov, Ms Sainty and Ms de Paor. Ms Healy survived her first showcase at the school working to put together a number of exhibits. Multi-talented Mr Spencer from Science, manned the lighting and sound booth, adding atmosphere to the event. We also thank him for his support with accompanying Year 10 student Elias on stage. Our newly appointed Principal Ms Neilsen also experienced her first CAPA Showcase and was extremely proud of the range of student abilities and performances on the night. The audience enjoyed delicious refreshments organised by Ms Brooks. Thanks to the staff who assisted with this important segment of the night. I would also like to acknowledge all staff and students who volunteered to assist on the night and ensured that we could offer the best possible experience for our students and the audience. Mr Baggaley CAPA The School Band performs at Engadine BandFest It has been a busy end of term for the School Band at South Sydney High School, competing at the Engadine BandFest and performing at the Senior CAPA Showcase. The Engadine BandFest is an annual event run by Engadine Music, held at the St George Auditorium in Kogarah. Ensembles from primary and high schools from around Sydney are awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze for their performance of a program consisting of 3 or 4 pieces. I was extremely proud of the bands’ performance and behavior on the day, we were successful in achieving a High Silver, and got some great feedback from the adjudicator. We also gained valuable experience that we will take into our future performances as an ensemble. It has been 13 years since South Sydney High School have entered an ensemble in the festival. This was made possible this year by the large enrolment of new Year 7 students into the band.
