Ainslie The Honourable David Peterson Chancellor, University of Toronto Please join us for UC’s holiday reception after the ceremony in West Hall. Donald C. Ainslie Professor Donald Ainslie will lead University College for a five-year term through June 2016. Prior to starting as UC Principal, he served as Chair of both the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Science, and the tri-campus graduate Department of Philosophy. A native of Toronto, he studied mathematics as an undergraduate at Queen’s University, and earned his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on the history of modern philosophy and bioethics. The University College Mace The University College mace is carved from ebony and features a Back InsIde cover sterling silver cap. It is an artifact of King’s College (1827), the precursor to University College (1853). The mace is carried by the bedel and used at the installation of College Principals. Since 1996, the mace has also been used at the University of Toronto’s Asia-Pacific graduation ceremonies in Hong Kong. The University College Bell The University College bell is housed in a tower located in the northwest corner of the building. The bell is traditionally rung upon the installation of a new College Principal. Historically, it has also been rung at meetings of the University College Literary and Athletic Society, Canada’s oldest democratically elected student government. .
