Uncouth Italy STOCK ITEMS Kellerei St. Pauls • region: Alto Adige To understand the wines of Kellerei St. Pauls, you must understand the stunning and dramatic terrain of Italy’s Alto Adige valley region; this is cool climate, mountain fruit. Dropping from the alps, along the border with Austria, the Adige river cuts a narrow valley through the mountains and foothills, terrain beloved by the decidedly Germanic Italians who live here. Based in the village of Eppan, St. Pauls, like most of the wineries in the Adige, is a co-op of quality minded growers and dates back more than 100 years, to its founding in 1907. Their desire to get back to honest, real winemaking—away from the big business of Tuscany—led them to Basilicata, where they produce modern, muscular Aglianico that expresses the distinct volcanic soils and terroir of their vineyards. A darling of critic Asimov at the NY Times, Prevostini is a star of the Valtellina. Item ID description grape/variety/production PVS100 17 Nebbiolo “Bottonero” I.G.T.
