Over the course of the next four years you will be challenged, explore many academic interests, discover new passions, and meet fascinating people. We hope Orientation will provide you with the necessary tools and information to navigate the many resources and opportunities offered by the University. As you experience Orientation week, we hope you will take full advantage of the variety of programs and events we have planned in order to introduce you to campus, help you make new friends, and inform you about all of the opportunities available to you. The knowledge you gain during Orientation will serve you throughout your four years here, so capture these moments and cherish them as you begin your journey in college. We are thrilled about this year’s Orientation, and we look forward to meeting you and your new classmates! Today marks the formal beginning of your academic journey as a college student. While I don’t know where that journey will take you, I am certain that if you open yourself up to the special opportunities that are available to you at the U of R, you will have a very fulfilling college experience. Academic advising is an important part of college and I urge you to take full advantage of your relationship with your undergraduate advisor. Over the next weeks and months, that person will get to know you and your interests; they will serve as your guide as you explore the broad array of classes that are available every semester and they will do their best to answer your questions or point you in the right direction when they’re not sure what the right answer is. I hope that your advisor will nudge you from time to time by encouraging you to take risks and to try some things you might not be entirely certain about. Undergraduate advising works best if you communicate with your advisor regularly. Be sure to let your advisor know about your goals and ambitions…as well as your worries. When you ask your advisor “what classes should I take?” they will respond by saying, “Well, what are you interested in?” Remember, you are in school to pursue your educational dreams, not someone else’s! Among my wishes for you in the coming year are: that you make a connection with your classmates and your hallmates and that you personally discover what it means to be part of the Rochester community; that you get to know at least one of your professors very well; that you seek advice from those who are interested in your success; and that you find one or two passions both inside and outside of class that are important to you. Good luck and please let me know if I can be helpful. I know you are going to have a very special year!
