Canon Fogarty states that clubs were formed in both Anacarly and Donohil1 in 1886. For the follOwing year, 1887. he lists an Anacarly learn, coached by Jerry Crosse 'and Jim Dwyer of Lacken, which, however, did not take part in the championships due 10 a dispute with the County Board. Football seems to have been the parish's main game in those years, for in 1888 the famed Bohercrowe side en roule to a Munster Championship "barely escaped defeat at the hands of Anacarly in Golden" in the County semi·final. Thereare few enough mentions of the parish in subsequent years and of those Donohi!l. in fact, seems to figure more prominently. When we come up tol1930and the founding of the west DiviSion, Anacarty were represented at the inaugral meeting by Charlie McCarthy, W.F. Quinlan and T. Ryan while Donohill, then joined with Cappawhite, were represented by George Furlong. Denis Touhy was a late arrival at the same meeting. DonohilV Cappawhite, in fact, won the first West J .H. Championship. The thirties seem to have been a time of building for Anacarty's hurlers and Minor success near the end of the decade was followed by the entry of their Senior hurlers for the West Championship in 1940 under the Eire Og banner. They did'nt have success that year but they did for the next four, crowning their quartet of Divisional titles with a famous County Senior crown in 1943-the only west side since Clonoulty in 1888 to achieve the distinction. After those heady days of the early forties the club hit Jeaner times and dropped from Senior ranks in the 1950s. They had in fact to wai t until 1961 when they joined with Cappawhite they again tasted West senior Hurling success-that had followed a Junior win for Eire Og in 1960. Since then they've taken Senior Divisional titles in 1964, '67, and '81. For a relatively sparsely populated rural parish they've remained remarkably prominent in G.A.A. affairs. Today they seek their eight Divisional title, their last being in 1981. EIRE OG'S CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD. West S.H. Championships-I941, 1942. 1943, 1944, 1964, 1967, 1981. Also as 51. Would he back Ihe native sod where he first learned the hurliog craft that ranked him among the greatest of his time or the club whose colours he wore to County honours in 1943? The last and only previous time these clubs met in the Di visional final, Bill took his place on II Golden side that lost by a tantalising point. Shortly afterwards he transferred to Eire ()g, the parish to which his employment as a teacher took him. That lost final waslo 1941 and two years later it WIIS Bill who sparked and Eire 09 surge that swiped II County Championship from Moycarkey's grasp. 1lle 'Star' report pinpoints Bill's role; "Four points ahelld with eight minutes to go, Moycarkey looked all set to take another county tille, but then like /I flash, BiD O'Oonnell !>ecured possession in II sharp Eire Og attack and from twenty yards sent in II bullet·like shot that gave Jim Keeffe no chance. This was the turning point in a game that had abounded in thrills. Eire Og infused with new life and hope tore down the field agllin for Tom Joy torush through another goal to be followed a minute later by Eire Og's fourth with Joy "gIIin the marksman. [t was all over ...... " For people outside the Division in former decades Bill O'Donnell made Golden a familiar name in a way, perhaps, that Christy Ring put Cloyne on the map. His inter·county career with Tipperaryspanned a decade from 1934 to 1944. The 1937 All Ireland triumph down in Killarney climaKed that involvement with Tipperary. However the famous Munsterfinal of 1941 is ranked as one of Bill'sgreatest displays. That was the "foot and mouth" year when Cork were nominated to represent Munster and then lat er faced Tipp to decide provincial honours. The former T aoiseach, Jack Lynch whom Bill O'Donnell marked on thaI occasion had this to say about the Golden man's performance when he wrote in a Sunday Independent supplement for Centenary Year. "Ill neverforgel the '4 1 match in Umerickas the Late Bill O'DonneD ran rings around me". If ver!atility is a feature of greatness then Bill was truly one of the greats. His four Railway Cup medals indicate this <I~ality quite astonishingly; in 1938 he played at right corner forward for Munster; two years later in 1940 he had transferred the length of the field to left corner back- the tOlally opposite position; in 1942 he captained Munster to success from full forward; and finally in 1943 he partnered Jack Lynch al midfield.
