This new knowledge will be used in disease models to identify new therapeutic targets and diagnostic tools for inflammatory diseases. CEMIR. was. established. as. a. Centre. of. Excellence. January. startup-package.. We. were. searching. for. persons. with. ex- 1,.2013..During.the.first.years.the.main.priority.was.to.es- cellent.scientific.background.to.complement.and.strengthen. tablish. a. unified. research. group. in. which. multidisciplinary. existing.CEMIR.research.groups.and.improve.the.scientific. colla.boration. was. encouraged. and. stimulated.. In. June. expertise.further,.especially.within.the.fields.of.proteomics,. 2014,.all ­CEMIR.research.activities.were.moved.to.the.new. bioinformatics. and. models. of. inflammatory. diseases.. Two. Knowledge.Centre.at.Øya.Campus.in.Trondheim.which.hosts. qualified. persons. were. accepted. for. the. positions.. Richard. first-class.laboratories.with.state.of.the.art.cellular.imaging. Kandasamy.started.in.December.2015,.and.Menno.Oudhoff. instruments..In.October.2015,.we.opened.a.new.BSL3-lab- joined. CEMIR. in. March. 2016.. The. two. new. group. leaders. oratory,. offering. the. highest. level. of. security. for. research. have.already.managed.to.obtain.substantial.external.funding. on.viruses.and.bacteria.in.Norway..The.new.lab.contains.an. to.their.research.projects. advanced.Leica.SP8.confocal.microscope.making.it.possible. to.study.immune.cells.infected.with.viable.mycobacteria.and. The.scientific.activities.at.CEMIR.have.proceeded.with.very. HIV ­virus.. CEMIR. has. access. to. unique. infrastructure. and. good. progress.. CEMIR. researchers. have. published. more. has.now.grown.to.be.a.vibrant.and.dynamic.centre.with.64. than.200.articles.since.2013,.several.in.high.quality ­journals. scientific.staff.members,.11.engineers,.15.students.and.one. like. Nature,. Nature. Immunology,. Autophagy,. PNAS. and. J. administrative.coordinator. .Immunol.. Seventeen. PhD. students. have. completed. their. theses.at.the.centre.since.2013.. CEMIR. has. established. close. collaboration. with. excellent. .researchers. from. other. institutions. by. recruiting. six. out- A.major.highlight.happened.May.30th.–.June.2nd.2016.at.the. standing. scientists. in. the. fields. of. cell. biology. and. innate. Knowledge. Centre,. Trondheim,. when. CEMIR. arranged. an. immunity. from. universities. in. Boston,. Los. Angeles,. Bonn. international.conference:.Conference.on.Molecular.Mecha- and.Oslo.(Drs.Fitzgerald,.Lien,.Underhill,.Latz,.Mollnes.and. nisms.of.Inflammation..Twentyfive.outstanding.international. .Stenmark).. They. have. contributed. extensively. to. the. re- researchers.were.invited.to.give.presentations,.and.this.gave. search.programme.at.the.Centre,.and.also.supervised.our. a. unique. opportunity. to. expand. our. insight. into. processes. PhD. students. and. post. docs.. Two. PhD. students. and. three. of. inflammatory. disorders.. The. conference. attracted. 200. post.docs.have.spent.extended.periods.in.their.labs.. .participants. from. all. over. the. world. and. this. arrangement. was.a.fantastic.success.where.we.were.able.to.make ­CEMIR. We.have.improved.and.strengthen.the.scientific.quality.and. visible. for. the. international. scientific. community. in. this. scope.of.our.centre.by.recruiting.two.new.group.leaders.in. .important.field.of.research.. 2015..The.positions.were.announced.as.Group.leaders.with. 3 CEMIR • Annual Report 2016 www.ntnu.edu/cemir CEMIR RESEARCH THEMES Inflammatory Responses Induced by Bacteria – Identification of Vesicle Transport Components and Signalling Pathways that regulate Inter feron Responses from Endosomes In the presence of systemic infection, microbial pathogens induce strong inflam- matory- and coagulation activation, leading to sepsis and septic shock. Also, an anti-inflammatory response is induced during sepsis that can contribute to secondary infections. Severe bacterial infections may lead to high amounts of type I IFNs that can result in production of immunosuppressive molecules increasing the risk for secondary infections.
