Boyd’s coaching journey began with the first coaching role was as coach of Tawa Rugby Club, where he spent nine years from 1989 to 1998. He then took over as Wellington’s second XV coach before becoming assistant coach of the Wellington Lions in 2003. From 2006 to 2008 he was assistant coach to John Plumtree at the Sharks Super Rugby club in South Africa. He has since worked at the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand as a coaching services advisor, and was defensive coach of Tonga’s national team at Rugby World Cup 2011. Boyd was also appointed as the Wellington Lions head coach in 2011, and took up the same role with New Zealand Under 20 a year later. As Hurricanes head coach he has taken the team to back to back Super Rugby finals. JOHN PLUMTREE POSITION: ASSISTANT COACH Plumtree joined the Hurricanes in 2015, but is no stranger to Super Rugby or Wellington. He was both assistant and head coach of the Durban-based Sharks Super Rugby team between 2008-2012 before a stint as the Irish national team’s forwards coach in the build up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Plumtree was the Wellington Lions head coach from 2001-2006, taking them to the finals in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Born in Taranaki he had a successful playing career as a flanker, with 40 caps for his home province before shifting to South Africa where he played 80 matches for the Natal Sharks from 1988 to 1997, winning two Currie Cup medals in 1990 and 1996.
