Kumiko Tool List

Kumiko Class Personal Tools The following is a description of the tools you will be expected to bring to class with you. We have included photos of tools to help you identify items when you are acquiring your tools (at the store, from your existing personal collection, or borrowed from friends and family). If you have additional questions, or if acquiring these tools is a financial challenge, don’t hesitate to contact Hammerstone ([email protected]). 1” Bench Chisel: All of the careful cutting of all the tiny Kumiko parts will be done with a bench chisel and a jig. We will build the jigs in class. You must bring a good chisel. While we often advocate for finding tools in your garage, in this case, only bring a used chisel if it is of excellent quality and has been well sharpened. The back of the chisel must be perfectly flat to perform in concert with the jig. If you are unsure of the quality of the sharpening of your chisel, consult an expert, or invest in a new one. The ideal width of your chisel is 1”, though anything from 3/4” to 1 1/2” will suffice. Here are some possible options: • Lee Valley Bevel Edge Chisel • Narex Classic Bevel Edge Chisel • Narex Richter Chisel • IRWIN Marples woodworking chisel Japanese Pull Saw (Dozuki) A saw that cuts on the pull stroke is ideal for cutting the tiny kumiko pieces to length. Look for a Dozuki style saw, preferably with at least 25 TPI (teeth per inch) Here are some options: • Extra Fine Dozuki (25 TPI) • SUIZAN ultra fine 8” Dozuki (30 TPI) Utility Knife: Also known as a box cutter. Any style of knife is fine, as long as it has a retractable blade and fresh blades. .
