Schutz Miscellany Collection, The Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Provenance Gift of John A. Schutz, May 5, 2006. Biographical Note on John A. Schutz John A. Schutz (1919-2005), was a professor, author and long-time Huntington Library reader in colonial American history. Schutz began his teaching career in 1945 at the California Institute of Technology, followed by Whittier College, and, from 1965 to 1991, at the University of Southern California. After Schutz's death, the material he had collected over the years was donated to the Huntington Library, on May 5, 2006, as part of the John A. Schutz Bequest. The Bequest included the William Ewart Gladstone Collection, Henry Cabot Lodge Collection, and the John A. Schutz Miscellany Collection. Cataloging Decisions 1. A large number of the letters and documents were originally pasted down or mounted into albums by previous owners. The letters and documents, in most cases, have been removed from the original pages and mountings; but some evidence of the original locations (old glue, tabs, etc.) remain on the letters. It was decided that, unless it was a paper mounted letter, this original evidence would not be noted on the folders. 2. A large number of the letters and documents also retain the pencilled notations and notes made by dealers or previous owners; these notations and notes were not removed nor noted on the folders. Scope and Content It is possible this Miscellany collection was assembled by John Schutz as part of his own research as an historian, as well as the letters and documents collected as autographs for his interest as a collector; the material covers a wide range of years, authors and subjects: Ephemera, Correspondence and Documents are arranged chronologically in Box 1: 1693-1865, and Box 2: 1866-1959. The 19th century material includes correspondence and documents related to, among others, the American and British politicians and historians, George Bancroft, John Bright, Richard Cobden, John Davis, Charles William Eliot, Henry Hallam, Anthony Ashley Cooper (Earl of Shaftesbury), Robert Cecil (Marquess of Salisbury), and Robert Winthrop.
