Recycled Ride to Burton Constable Hall 19th April 24, 2019 Outward Journey: Tickton, Routh, Meaux, Benningholme, Swine, Coniston, Sproatley & Burton Constable Hall Return via Old Ellerby, Skirlaugh, Benningholme, Meaux, Routh & Tickton Distance 33.43 miles Members: Keith Baskill, Adrian Benson, John Boddice, John Kilner, Ian Metcalfe, Bob Savage, Steve Watts, Trev Whatmore & Dave Williamson Nine of us met at the roundabout on Swinemoor Lane on a beautiful sunny morning. A pretty good turnout considering that it was Good Friday. Our usual route would have taken us via Skirlaugh and Old Ellerby but Adrian suggested that it might prove interesting if we did it in reverse going via Swine and Coniston. This proved to be very interesting as things can look very different when approaching them a different direction. Gathering at the bridge at Benningholme for our usual photo shoot we wondered about the Lambwath Stream, where it came from, where did it go etc. Further investigation reveals that it is in fact an important land drain for the district originating in Aldbrough and flowing west into the floodplain of the River Hull. 1 Riding through Swine and Coniston we came to the Burton Constable Caravan Park at Sproatley. Trev suggested that we have a nosey and see what it had to offer. Much to our surprise we discovered a mobile café, very similar to The Wild Bird at North Cave, as well as a Bar. 2 Mobile Café Ladies This was certainly a first for our group although Ian had been before. Tucking in to our bacon butties etc. we were approached by a member of staff who took to take some photos of us in our U3A tops. Apparently, these were going to be used in some of their promotional literature. After lunch we went off road for a short distance along a well-worn path to The Stables Café at Burton Constable Hall where we had our afters. Bodders departed at this stage as he had other business to attend to at home. 3 We had been informed that The Crown & Anchor at Tickton had recently reopened so naturally we assumed that Willis’s Ice Cream Café, next door to the pub, would also have reopened too. You can imagine our disappointment on arrival, only to find that it was still closed. The new owners/tenants of The Crown & Anchor told us that it would be reopening the following day.
