After capturing Liège, German troops defeated Allied offensive attempts in Alsace and the Ardennes. As German troops advanced across France, a flank of the German army moved to surround Paris—the French capital—from the north. When German troops tried to cross the Marne River, Allied troops advanced into gaps in the German lines. In early September 1914, the Allied troops succeeded in driving the Germans backward in the Battle of the Marne. MAP ACTIVITY 1. On the map, use a light color to shade the area of France. 2.
