STRIVING FOR SCHOOL EXCELLENCE It has been a hectic start to the term with many TERM 4 CALENDAR additional opportunities for our students. Mr Lees co- ordinated a great experience for fourteen students WEEK 4 who successfully completed an intense shearing Year 12 Work Placement 30 Oct-3 Nov school. All of these students gained a valuable insight Penrith Exchange Program into the skills and demands of this career. Girls CHS Basketball ‘Final 8’ 31 Oct – 2 Nov at Terrigal Mrs Barnes and her Year 9/10 Food Technology students participated in a catering experience for the Wednesday 1 Nov CHS Water Polo – Albury 10-year anniversary of the Lake Cowal Foundation. COMPETITION Earlier in the year it was reported that the year 8’s had created a poster after collecting their own data and entered their work into a national poster competition ran by SSAI. Even though judging is currently underway, the students received their participation certificates this week for their entries. The winners will be announce mid-November. Good luck year 8. SYDNEY EXCURSION Year 11 students studying Legal Studies, Geography and Business Studies travelled to Sydney on the 11th to 13th of October to visit a range of places to use as case studies to support their HSC studies. For the first time, Henry Lawson High School’s Business and Legal Studies classes joined the excursion accompanied by Mrs Griffiths. The first place we visited on the excursion was the Parramatta family courts where we found out about the operations of the family courts from the Senior Registrar Mr Paul Lelarge and Retired Senior Family Court Judge The Honory David Collier. Here we also learnt about the issues facing family courts in relation to access and efficiency, the importance of the registrar and alternative dispute resolution mechanism. After our session at the courts, we battled the traffic on Parramatta road and headed into The Sydney harbour YHA where we walked down to Circular Quay to catch a ferry for a cruise over to Darling Harbour. This was a chance for students to experience Darling Harbour on our way to have dinner in china town to allow the geography students an opportunity to see an urban village. On day two, we woke up nice and early to walk down to Martin Place in the hope of making an appearance on Sunrise. To our surprise, Jessica Mauboy was there signing autographs for the new Secret Daughter soundtrack and Sam Mack was out the front doing the weather. Thankyou also to Mr Hague for supervising the excursion and Mrs Markham for organising the excursion. SHEARING SCHOOL During week 2 of term 4 fourteen students from West Wyalong High School attended a shearing school run by Australian Wool Innovations. The fourteen students who attended were Zac Anderson, Joe Amarant, Jacob Lebner, Ethan Rowe, Bobby Jones, Max Jones, Harry Judd, Annie Worner, Chloe Worner, Gracelyn Norton, Harrison Thomas, Toby Whyte, Trent Bell and Billy Jones. The students learnt how to shear using The Five Pillars of Shearing: 1 Gear and Cut, 2 Position, 3 Freehand, 4 Grip, and 5 Entry. They looked at the wool handling side of shearing and the importance of classing wool correctly. Throughout the week, they were reminded of the importance of good manners, hygiene and looking after themselves in relation to healthy eating, plenty of sleep and staying hydrated. Teamwork was AEROBIC NATIONALS 2017 another message passed onto the students. After gaining a place in the National finals 2017, West A big thank you to John and Leanne Staniforth for Wyalong High School students, Jessica Payne, Katie providing us with the venue.
