"Name of the Medicine Buddha", Mahayana chant of Sanskrit (Indian language) name, "Yo-shih-fu", followed by "Three Refuges" in Chinese. Accompanied by gongs, mu yu /muyu "wooden fish", various sizes of upward-facing externally-struck bells, barrel drum. Program music depicting military scenes and battles. Played on the p'i p'a/pipa, a 4-stringed pear- shaped short-necked plucked lute imported from Central/West Asia. Performed by Wu Ziying. Performed on the erh hu/erhu, 2-stringed spike fiddle (bowed lute) imported from Mongol-Tibetan borderlands. Composed by Liu Tien-hua (early 20th c.), played by Lui Man- Sing. (Chinese Masterpieces for the Erh-hu A: 1) Erh hu Hu ch’in/Huqin or Ch'ing hu/Jinghu 5 TRIUMPH FROM THE BATTLEFIELD: Military-style traditional program music 23:10 played by Cantonese-style orchestra led by Lui Man-Sing. Instruments: P'i p'a/Pipa, Erh hu/Erhu, Hu ch’in/Huqin or Ch’ing hu/Jinghu (small high-octave erh hu), Da hu/Dahu (large low-octave erh hu), Cheng/Zheng (16-string plucked zither), San hsien/Sanxian (3-string Yang ch'in/Yangqin plucked lute), Yang ch'in/Yangqin (struck zither or hammered dulcimer), Ti tsu/Dizi (cross-blown flute with tissue membrane over one hole), Mu yu/Muyu ("wooden fish" percussion idiophone), drums, cymbals, gongs. (CMftE-h A: 3) Border Areas: Taiwan 6 MILLET GERMINATING SONG: Song for germinating (starting plants 27:00 growing from) millet seeds, agricultural/ritual song by male villagers of the Bunun people of Taiwan. Polyphonic (multi-part) music, with some men singing a repeating descending-pitch melody pattern against a gradual microtonal rising part sung by others; constantly changing harmonic relationships.
