LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Don Tiff was born September 7, 1910. The pianist, composer and arranger performed in the orchestras of Jan Garber, Raymond Scott and others; as well as led his own bands. In addition, he oversaw other musical endeavors, including serving as Musical Director at the Orpheum Theatre in Kansas City. Among his original compositions are Sunburst, Carmel By The Sea, and A Million And One Pine Trees. Tiff died September 23, 1998. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Don Tiff Collection was donated to the Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections by Mrs. Don Tiff and was delivered to the department by Don F. Downing. The collection focuses on Tiff'‟s extensive collection of sheet music and songbooks. Additional material include eight 8x10 photographs, several of which include Tiff; and two original scores by Tiff, Carmel By The Sea and A Million And One Pine Trees. Other miscellaneous items include three programs from the Orpheum Theatre from 1936, where Tiff acted as musical director; a song request card; and a newspaper clipping about Tiff. LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION SERIES NOTES SERIES I: SHEET MUSIC Series I has been integrated into the Department of Special Collections‟ Popular American Sheet Music Collection and ancillary sheet music collections, including the Kansas City Sheet Music Collection and the WWI Sheet Music Collection. (The sheet music for Sunburst, composed by Don Tiff, is housed with the Kansas City Sheet Music Collection.) This series consists of approximately 300 sheet music titles, which can be browsed using the finding aid to this collection. SERIES II: SONGBOOKS Series II is contained in 18 folders in Box 1, consisting of 20 songbooks. The songbooks range in style from the Beatles to Broadway Hits. Also included are several songbooks of vocal selections from shows such as Annie, Oliver & The Unsinkable Molly Brown. There are also souvenir songbooks for both Judy Garland and Ethel Smith. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by songbook title, then by song title within each songbook. SERIES III: MANUSCRIPT SCORES Series III is contained in one folder in Box 2. The folder houses two manuscript scores by Don Tiff, Carmel By The Sea and A Million And One Pine Trees, as well as one manuscript score, Come To Me, Bend To Me (by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe). SERIES IV: PHOTOGRAPHS Series IV is contained in one folder in Box 2, consisting of eight photographs. Several of the photographs include Don Tiff in promotional, performance and candid shots. Other photographs include autographed publicity shots of Jan Murray and Joey Bishop. SERIES V: MISCELLANEOUS Series V is contained in one folder in Box 2, consisting of miscellaneous ephemera. Included are three programs from the Orpheum Theatre, where Tiff acted as musical director, dated February, March & April 1936. Also included is a 1956 newspaper clipping from The Kansas City Star about Tiff‟s recent musical activities of the time (photo and small caption); and a song request card from The Tropics, a cocktail lounge at the Hotel Phillips in Kansas City, MO.
