Miss Elliott Head of RE 1 Weekly Newsletter Friday 7th March February Music – Jubilee Concert On Friday 28th February we welcomed former pupil Sophie Robertshaw and her friends from the Cataleya Quintet. The Quintet performed for all pupils in KS3 during assembly and started the two day event off with a real bang! One pupil commented „They were that good I thought it was a CD!‟ Sophie introduced each instrument to the pupils, talked about her achievements so far and how all the players met whilst studying at the Royal College of Music in London. Following this, current and potential GCSE Music students were invited to a Master class on Mozart over lunch. At GCSE, pupils have to study twelve set works and the First Movement of Mozart‟s 40th Symphony is one such work. Pupils were able to hear an arrangement of this work for Woodwind Quintet, the melodies used in the piece and how they were developed. The pupils that attended were full of praise for the group. Here are some comments from pupils: „I learnt a lot. Live performance makes you notice more about the piece.‟ „I enjoyed the workshop on Friday as it gave me an insight into the structure of the Mozart piece and the use of instruments.‟ In the afternoon we welcomed over 160 pupils from six primary schools: Cop Lane, Fulwood and Cadley, Middleforth, Longton, Lostock Hall and Woodplumpton St. Annes. The pupils had a fantastic time and some even had the chance to conduct the Quintet. Pupils from Lostock Hall are now going to use this as part of their Arts Award portfolios. Following the success of Friday, the Quintet then returned on Saturday afternoon to lead a workshop with woodwind players from across Lancashire. The group formed a number of ensembles and then rehearsed pieces to be performed at the Jubilee Concert that evening. The concert was a tremendous success and included performances from the young musicians themselves, the Cataleya Quintet and the Lancashire Schools‟ Jazz Orchestra directed by Paul Rigby. Everyone that attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the young people involved benefitted greatly from hearing both the Jazz Orchestra and the Cataleya Quintet. Here are just some of the comments from the pupils: „I loved the Jazz Orchestra it sounded amazing and I also loved the song „Forget You‟ at the end when all the instruments joined in!‟ „I was pretty nervous about the performance but in the end I really enjoyed myself!‟ „The workshop was really interesting and it was nice to learn with someone so experienced. I think the day made me much more confident with other musicians and I was proud to be a part of the concert in the evening. I would really like to do it again. Seeing the Jazz Orchestra was also a really good part of Saturday because it showed me I have the opportunity to do more musically.‟ Overall, the Jubilee event was a great success, thank you to everyone who supported us on this occasion.
