Walker's The End of Civilization Theatre UNB will present The End of Civilization, one of the six plays in acclaimed Canadian playwright and screenwriter George F. Walker's award-winning Suburban Motel series, February 23-26 at Memorial Hall. Fredericton audiences had a chance to see Adult Entertainment, one of the earlier plays in this gritty series, last fall. The End of Civilization, set in the same seedy motel on the outskirts of Toronto, features Adult Entertainment's pair of earnest but slightly crooked cops, Max and Donny, on the case of a serial murderer who seems to be driven by the desperate, simple need to make a living in a country that has turned its back on the downtrodden. The play's formula of film noir meets Mike Harris's Ontario will be familiar to those who are fans of Walker's current CBC series, This is Wonderland. The End of Civilization is being produced as a thesis production by graduating UNB theatre students Nicholas Cole, Yang Li, Ginny Steeves, and Zita Nyarady. Performances are 8 pm nightly, with tickets ($8 regular, $6 student) available at the door. The play carries a language and content warning. Mr. Geddes’s latest poetry collection, Skaldance, was published in 2000 by Fredericton’s Goose Lane Editions. His most recent work is Kingdom of Ten Thousand Things: An Impossible Journey from Kabul to Chiapas is the story of a 5th-century Buddhist monk from Kabul reported to have travelled from China to the Americas in 458AD, returning in 499AD to tell his story to the court historians. Gary Geddes has edited and published more than thirty other works in a wide variety of genres, including poetry, fiction, drama, translation, criticism, and non-fiction. He is the winner of multiple awards—the E. J. Pratt Medal, the Canadian Author’s Association National Poetry Prize, the Archibald Lampman Poetry Prize —and a nominee for the prestigious Gabriela Mistral Prize, offered by the Organization of American States for service to Latin America. Born in Vancouver in 1940, Geddes studied at the University of British Columbia (B.A., 1962) and at the University of Toronto (M.A., 1966; PhD., 1975).
