Personal Protective Equipment Standard

L10 Interserve Construction also trading as Paragon Personal Protective Equipment Standard Issue 12 July 2018 L10 02072018 INTERSERVE CONSTRUCTION also trading as Paragon L10 Introduction The intention of this standard is to ensure that all people on Interserve Construction sites, who need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), have PPE that is effective and comfortable. We have introduced this standard as experience has shown us that whilst PPE provided meets the relevant standards and is appropriately marked, in practice quality is variable and often uncomfortable. This standard therefore details acceptable PPE, by manufacturer and model number for the various types of PPE. This is not a standard introducing mandatory wearing of PPE, although there will be site rules specifying minimum PPE to be worn (detailed in the Project Management Plan/ Health and Safety Plan for the site). This will include head, hand and light eye protection, safety footwear and high visibility clothing. Scope This standard applies to all people on our sites and under Interserve Construction control including Interserve Construction Employees and Subcontractors to Interserve Construction. This includes any workers from sub-sub contractors that the subcontractor may have let *Compliance with this standard is a condition of the Interserve Construction “Health and Safety Code for Subcontractors” and therefore a contract requirement. Principles and Responsibilities The requirements for personal protective equipment are contained in legislation including the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992, and numerous other Regulations. The principles are that the provision of PPE is a last resort, where a risk cannot be controlled adequately by other means. PPE should be appropriate to the risk, environment and individual. Be compatible with other PPE, be maintained and in good condition. Responsibilities for this fall on the employer, including the need to provide without charge to the employee, and to provide the employee with instruction and training necessary to ensure its correct use. Similarly employees have a responsibility to use correctly and report defects or loss. L10 02072018 INTERSERVE CONSTRUCTION also trading as Paragon L10 This standard does not affect these duties. Subcontractors and their employees remain responsible for the duties outlined above. Should any situation arise where the subcontractor believes there is a conflict between their duties and compliance with this standard, then they are to feedback as detailed below. Feedback We have undertaken research and consultation to identify equipment that meets the stated intention of this standard, i.e. effective and comfortable. We welcome any feedback you may have. For Interserve Construction employees this should be via the “feedback” facility on the Document Management System. For others it should be via the Interserve Construction site management who in turn feedback through the Document Management System. Interserve Construction commit to periodically review this standard and revise as necessary, considering feedback received. Suppliers In compiling this standard we have tried to include items that are readily available from national industry suppliers. Alternatively Interserve Construction can supply PPE that meets this standard at competitive rates, contact; Interserve Site Services Brickyard Road Aldridge Walsall West Midlands WS9 8SR Phone: 01922 749062 Fax: 01922 749 095 E –mail: [email protected] L10 02072018 INTERSERVE CONSTRUCTION also trading as Paragon L10 ACCEPTED PPE LIST TYPE STANDARD COMMENTS PPE SUPPLIER & PRODUCT NAME/REFERENCE Head Protection Build UK Standard Colours: Black: Supervisor Orange: Slinger / Signaller JSP Ltd. www.jsp.co.uk White: Site Manager Competent Operative Mk 3, MK 7, Evo 3, Evo 5 and Evo 8 Helmets.
