There is no resurrection and there is no eternal life apart from Christ. Where there is resurrection there is life. When Jesus stated, “I am the life,” He meant that He has the power to bestow eternal life (John 6:33; 10:28; Reve- lation 1:18). The one who believes in Christ has eternal life that transcends physical death. To believe in Jesus means to accept everything He says as true and obey His words (John 12:44-48; 14:15). What he did then and what he will do someday - - he does today by raising people from a life of sin and death - - to a life of faith and joy in the Lord. Jesus is the resurrection and the life for today. Martha said, "Lord, don’t bother, he has been dead four days already; it is too late." Don’t we do the same with people who have wandered away from the Lord already years ago? Don’t we put a fence around them and say, "Oh well, what’s the use?" He or she has been like this for so long, there won’t be any change. If there was going to be we would have seen it by now. How do we go about with our present scenario, when we see the Demographic shift taking place in our own parishes, we don’t see the younger people come to Church anymore and we tend to think of them different- ly, as people not interested in God and His place of worship but given into doing things for themselves ra- ther than God. It is like the case of the dead man, Lazarus, who died on account of illness. If we don’t put our hands together and go in search of our lost brothers and sisters who need our care & attention and more so of our love that God cares for them, we’re giving up on them too. We can give them some sort of reassurance that they are loved and needed and God awaits their return. We need to present them to Jesus so that He can say to them as he said to Lazarus “Come Out.” The dead man Lazarus came to life again. We would be bringing life into their lives. We believe that Jesus can raise the dead: even when they have turned to dust. Yet, knowing all that, some- times we still put a fence around the power of Jesus: can He raise my son from a life of sin and unbelief? Can He raise him to a life of faith? Can He do it after all those years? Jesus shows that neither Death nor time is an obstacle to Him. Well, if he can do it to Paul who hated him, and if he can raise a man who was decaying in the grave then he can raise your son or daughter, or your brother or sister, to a life of faith and obedience. He can do it to the people in your community as well. Let’s not put a fence around the power of Jesus: He can raise the dead because he is the resurrection and the life: "Just believe!" -Fr.
