THE HONOURABLE YONAH MARTIN M o n t h l y N e w s B u l l e t i n M a r c h 1 s t , 2 0 1 9 Senate of Canada SENATE OF 100TH ANNIVERSARY LUNAR NEW YEAR CANADA BUILDING OF SAMILJEOL CELEBRATIONS SENATOR'S MESSAGE Sincere greetings from the Senate of Canada! Today is the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement ("Samiljeol") of the Korean people from Japanese colonial rule. On this day, we honour and remember the patriots and martyrs of the movement, whose courage and sacrifice mobilized millions of people to march peacefully and stand up to tyranny and oppression. The rights and freedoms earned by these courageous individuals and defended by the Veterans of the Korean War can never be taken for granted. So much has happened in the month of February - the ringing in of the Lunar New Year of the Golden Pig to the 1st chamber sittings in the newly refurbished Senate of Canada Building (former Government Conference Centre); and the federal by-elections on Feb. 25th. Kudos to Burnaby South Candidate Jay Shin and his team and to all the campaigns for their efforts in a hard-fought race. The historic Samiljeol movement illuminates the current scandal gripping Parliament Hill and the nation, as it cuts to the very core of our democracy - the respect for the rule of law. With that said, my dedicated staff and I will continue to hold the government to account and do our very best in all that we do. - Senator Yonah Martin SENATE OF CANADA BUILDING Ottawa, ON Previously known as the Government Conference Centre (and before that a historic train station built in 1920), the Senate of Canada now has a new temporary home. The Senate of Canada Building (SCB) which houses the new Senate Chamber, committee rooms and leadership offices, is a unique structure that juxtaposes historic and contemporary designs throughout the SCB. Senator Martin’s new office is located on the third floor in a beautiful corner office that overlooks the National War Memorial and National Arts Centre. Her doors are always open to welcome anyone, near or far, to visit her Deputy Leader's office in the "new" Senate of Canada Building. On the eve of the milestone anniversary, the Korean War Commemorative Committee (along with several regional community leaders and stakeholders) convened for its quarterly meeting in the new Senate of Canada Building. There was much to celebrate during a light lunch that followed - Veteran Claude Charland's 90th birthday (27th) and two wedding anniversaries. His Excellency Ambassador Maeng-ho Shin joined the group in the Senate chamber for Sen. Martin's statement about the 100th anniversary of Samiljeol (see link). Marches, ceremonies and events marking this important milestone are taking place across the country on this day, bringing communities together in peace and remembrance.
