DRAFT EWES The ewes are going dearer by the week, not many big ewes on offer today but the overall average was up around £6 a head at £71. Top of the day was £97.50 from Ian Braund of Whitstone, Mules topped at £89.50 from FH Crocombe & Sons of Lugworthy. Top 10 Blues averaged £371, Limousins topped at £375 for PH Collins Partnership closely followed by the best from Richard Wooldridge of Beaworthy at £345 and Messrs Furse of Ashwater at £295. Charolais babies topped at £345 from Mike Greenaway with top Herefords pushing onto £280 for Messrs Tape of Hartland. Plenty of trade for Montbeliardes today with Rob Squire of Torrington in pole position at £205. A big entry of Angus bulls saw the top 10 average £221 and to a top call of £282 on behalf of W & N Furse of Sutcombe. In the heifer pens best Blue heifers hit £345 for Messrs Petherick whilst Darren Furse of Westcott saw his top 3 reach £325 (2) & £311 with Berny Worth of West Down at £315, Kevin Parsons at £310 and John Elliot of Bradford at £300. Messrs Collins Partnership of Winscott saw their best pair of Limousin calves at £335 with Messrs Nancekivell of Kilkhampton at £300. A wonderful trade for Holstein bull calves today saw the vast majority go off to farms for rearing and to a top call of £155 for N & F Cleave of Launcells, £145 (2) for Messrs Nancekivell & £142 (3) for Victor & Mary Brown of Stibb Cross. Plenty of after grass being released in the last few weeks saw several purchasers keen to stock up early. Plenty of forward stores over £1100 with a top call of £1225 for an Aberdeen Angus steer from Mr J Skinner of Bude. British Blues topped at £1215 for a steer with condition from Messrs Jenkin of Bray Shop, other British Blues from the same farm £1165 (2) & £1115. Messrs Ogborne of Ashwater realised £1185 for a British Blue. A lovely run of shapely Herefords from Messrs Ogborne of Quoditch rose to £1095 (4) with others at £930. A run of quality single suckled steers and heifers from Mr G Rose of Highampton saw Limousins to £1130 & £990, British Blues £1060 and £1045. A superb shapely British Blue heifer from the same farm saw a top call of £1185 and others to £1070 (3). Dairy x heifers topped at £1080 for a good confirmation of British Blues from Messrs Barrow of Torrington. Native heifers topped at £975 for a weighing Hereford from Messrs Ogborne of Ashwater who sold other Herefords to £940. Holstein steers with flesh and frame saw a much stronger trade to a top of £950 from Messrs Ogborne with Norwegian Red steers from the same farm also £950 (5). Several other Holsteins looked like they has slipped over the past few weeks which saw trade slightly harder. Young Continental & Natives in short supply, stronger 12mth steers in excess of £700. Plenty of steers £600+ - more required! Cows and calves topped at £1175 for a Limousin with a bull calf at foot from Messrs Barrow of Torrington. Larger framed out of parlour cows reached £540 for Messrs Adams of Torrington, GRAZING COWS other smaller framed cows £445 OTM WEIGHING A well finished Limousin from Messrs Adams of Torrington topped at 136p realising COWS £903. A run of well finished Native steers from Mr E Partridge of Bradworthy topped at FINISHED CATTLE 160.5p realising £1187. First quality heifers In Milk Cows and Heifers 1600 1240 had a very consistent trade with an overall Dry Cows 1450 1148 average of £1920 and more heifers could have been sold to meet demand. A smart run of in milk and dry 2nd calving Jersey x cows topped at £800. 3rd calving cows topped at £1500 for ‘Bocaddon Theodore CA Landa’ on behalf of Messrs SR Gilbert & Son of Sheepwash. Messrs JJ Uglow & Sons of Whitstone saw a further dispersal consignment of in milk cows top at £1600 for a 1st calving heifer yielding 28Kgs. The vendors saw a very good trade for their dry cows which topped at £1480 for a 2nd calving cow due to calf in November with its 3rd. A good entry of In calf heifers saw a fast trade topping at £1500 for an in calf heifer due late October on behalf of Mr E Gay of Chulmleigh. Mr Colin Davey of Delabole had a well fleshed run of strong 5 ½ - 8 months in calf heifers which sold to good demand topping at £1400 on two occasions. A late entry of grazing type crossbred spring calving in calf heifers saw a steady trade topping at £650 on behalf of Holland Farms, Milton Abbot.
