ASTW NEWS 11.05.11 Hello All Again welcome to the e-newsletter for the Australian Society of Traditional Wrestlers, a united group focusing on the promotion of all the non-aligned grappling combat sports played in this country & indeed any style of wrestling. Australian Beach Wrestling Committee (Affiliated with Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées <http://www.fila-wrestling.com/> ) Contact Hus Erzurmumlu <[email protected]> Yes the ASTW continues to expand & three new groups have been created since the last mail out, bringing us now to 20 separate organisations. Glimasamband Astralia was formed with a specific mandate to develop the Icelandic national sport of Glima in conjunction with the cultural organisation, the Icelandic Association of Australia. Glima is an unusual type of belt wrestling in which the wrestlers must maintain a completely upright posture throughout the match & it is now being embraced throughout Scandinavian countries as a lost martial art of the Vikings. The International Glima Association was formed in 2008, currently with 6 member nations & an annual Glima World Championship. When notified that a new group was being created to promote the sport in Australia they became quite excited by the prospect but also surprised that one was forming so far away from the Northern European Glima epi-centre. I will continue to keep information about this sport posted on this mail out & if you would like to learn more, get involved or even try the sport either contact myself or Simmi via the above email. Please do check out this video of what the sport looks like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_haS_FaTekE The Australian Kazakh Kures Association was developed under a similar principle, to link the sport with the Kazakh Society of Australia & develop it as a cultural activity amongst expatriate Kazakhs living in Australia. The president of the World Kazakh Kures Federation has given his support to this development and hopes to see Australians competing at a future World Kazakh Kures Championship. Although Kazakh Kures is an ancient sport, it has only recently been developed for an international circuit & is now recognised as a traditional wrestling style by FILA. Again this video gives a clear representation of the sport http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjLgYaGHa_s&feature=related The other group, the Australian Beach Wrestling Committee was formed with a different basis. Following along the lines of the Australian Pankration & Grappling Committee, with the idea to work closely with Wrestling Australia Inc to develop competitions, especially a national championship, in the FILA sport of Beach Wrestling, the Australian Beach Wrestling Committee has a long way to go before this comes to fruition. Noting the Australian passion for beach sports & surf culture it is surprising that this concept hasn’t already developed and new partnerships are already being formed with associate members of Surf Lifesaving Australia. Here is some video footage of the Beach Wrestling World Championship in Budva Montenegro last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_RjaKJNA3s The other essential events to report are that the ASTW now has its first official sponsor, the martial arts supplier Weapons Plus whose contact details can be seen below & our traditional wrestling events are now being reported in a new national magazine called “Rumble”, which although focusing on Professional Wrestling is also a broad spectrum media covering the international MMA scene & the Australian martial arts scene in general. I hope you are able to support Weapons Plus who are willing to import any & all equipment required for the Australian martial artist & you enjoy the information provided by Rumble Magazine, the first time that anyone has tried to unify the diverse Australian wrestling community in print media. 3 News 18.01.11 Mt Druitt Wrestling & Grappling Club; official opening of a multi-style combat grappling academy at Mt Druitt PCYC & the first indigenous run club in Australia, which is also the current HQ for the Coreeda Association; checkout the Facebook site for more details http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mount-Druitt-Wrestling-Grappling-Club/186543231370539 22.01.11 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Trials in Melbourne & Sydney; checkout the website for results http://www.adcombat.com/news/2011-01-26/adcc-world-championships-one-step-closer-adcc- australian-trials-results 26.01.11 Pan-Celtic Wrestling World Championships at the Celtic Australia Day gathering under the Harbour Bridge at Milsons Point in Sydney; congratulations to the professional MMA fighter Brian Ebersole who represented Ireland for this title http://www.celticcouncil.org.au/ 29.01.11 Wrestling Australia Inc, the Australian Sports Commission recognised
