THE STREETS WHERE THEY LIVED: ADDRESSES OF THE TITANIC'S CREW (AND A FEW PASSENGERS) IN SOUTHAMPTON. When the crew signed on, they gave the clerks a contact address and place for half-pay to be sent for their wives and dependents. For local Southampton crew, this was usually their home address, but some men seem to have given the addresses of relatives or neighbours. Others were not local, but had lodgings locally, and they gave the address of their rooms or hotel or hostel. These addresses do not seem to have been recorded with any particular care: street names are spelt phonetically or simply wrong. Following the disaster, the compilers of the casualty lists were faced with the task of matching the details given on the Crew Agreement with those given by families and dependents after the disaster. The earliest published lists were in the local newspapers, the most detailed of which was in the Southampton Times, which listed the Southampton crew, saved and lost, by street. This is full of miss-hearings, misspellings and misprints, and illustrates the difficulties of transmitting accurate information about so many crew. The US Senate Inquiry report included a crew list, drawn up hastily from the Crew Agreement, but including other addresses that may be the contact details of family members. This list, for many years the only published list available to Titanic researchers, is unfortunately hampered by the inevitable lack of local knowledge of the US clerks, and by the usual miss-hearings, misspellings and misprints. The release of the National Archives' CD-ROM "Titanic: the True Story", with its digital images of all the Titanic documents held by the National Archives meant that we could see the original Crew Agreement, casualty and discharge lists, together with correspondence and other papers. This list takes as its primary source the Crew Agreement, corrected using the local directories and the 1911 census returns. We acknowledge years of research by local Southampton Titanic historian Brian Ticehurst. Some crew appear more than once: surviving crew may have given a different address on discharge (for example, Frank Oliver Evans, who signed on from the Salvation Army Home for Working Men in Northam, but gave his address at the US Senate hearings as St Michael's House. In other words, Frank did not have a permanent address in Southampton, but stayed where he could get low-cost accommodation.)
