2013 New Jersey Election Results

2013 New Jersey Election Results SUMMARY As indicated by all of the pre-election polls Governor Chris Christie (R) cruised to victory over challenger State Senator Barbara Buono (D). With this significant re-election victory the Governor’s 2016 national aspirations become even more realistic. At the same time Chris Christie’s win did not result in down ballot coattails, both houses of the New Jersey Legislature remained under Democratic control with only two Republican gains in the Assembly. GOVERNOR As expected, Governor Chris Chirstie (R) easily won re-election for a second term as Governor of the State of New Jersey over challenger State Senator Barbara Buono (D) by a resounding margin of 60% to 38%. The Governor carried every county in the state with the exception of the traditional democratic strongholds of Essex and Hudson. Even in those democratic areas Buono’s margin of victory lagged far behind normal pluralities. LEGISLATURE Targeted Districts 1st Legislative District (Cape May and parts of Atlantic and Cumberland Counties) Incumbent State Senator Jeff Van Drew (D) withheld a significant challenge from Susan Schmidt (R) winning the district with 59% to 40% percent of the vote and Assemblyman Bob Andrzejcak retained his seat with 27% of the vote. However - Republicans may have picked up one seat with Cumberland County Freeholder Sam Fiocchi (R) defeating incumbent Assemblyman Nelson Albano (D). The incumbent faced criticism since The Star-Ledger reported how he used his position to try to get out of a speeding ticket. Since the difference between the candidates is only 1284 votes a recount is possible. 2nd Legislative District (parts of Atlantic County) In the 2nd Legislative State Senate race Jim Whelan (D) has retained his seat with a 55% to 45% vote percentage over his opponent Frank Balles (R). Assembly race remains too close to call. Current reports have incumbent Assemblymen Chris Brown and John Amodeo with 23,930 and 23,047 votes respectively. Running only 379 votes behind is democratic challenger Vincent Mazzeo a recount is likely in this district. 3rd Legislative District (Salem and parts of Cumberland and Gloucester Counties) State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D) staved off a challenge from Niki Trunk (R) receiving a 55% to 45% vote percentage. On the Assembly side incumbents John Burzichelli and Celeste Riley have won with 28% and 27% percent of the vote. 212 West State Street Trenton, NJ 08608 Tel: 609/392-3100 Fax: 609/392-6347 2013 New Jersey Election Results 14th Legislative District (parts of Mercer and Middlesex Counties) Incumbent State Senator Linda Greenstein (D) has edged out former State Senator Peter Inverso to retain her seat with a 1200 vote margin receiving 50% to 48% of the vote. Assemblyman Pat Diegnan (D) and newcomer Nancy Pinkin (D) easily won their seats with 27% and 26% percent of the vote respectively. 38th Legislative District (parts of Bergen and Passaic Counties) Incumbent Senator Bob Gordon (D) retained his seat in a hotly contested race against Fernando Alonso (R) with 52% to 48% percent of the vote. On the Assembly side it appears that Republican candidate Rochelle Park Mayor Joe Scarpa (R) will win one of the previously Democratic Assembly seats. With Paramus Councilman Joseph Lagana (D) edging out incumbent Assemblyman Tim Eustace (D) for the other seat. The difference between the four Assembly candidates is only 300 votes; expect a recount in this district.
