Moira Shire is bounded by the Murray River in the north and west, Indigo Shire and the Rural City of Wangaratta in the east, and Benalla Rural City, the City of Greater Shepparton and the Shire of Campaspe in the south. Name origin Moira is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "lake or sea". Important Population Land area Population density Statistics 28,123 404,493 0.07 2011 Usual residents hectares (4,045 persons per hectare Km2) Moira Shire Legend Districts Moira Shire Settlement history European settlement dates from the 1830s, with land used mainly for grazing, farming and saw-milling. Growth was minimal until the 1870s and 1880s, aided by the construction of railway lines and the establishment of several townships. The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly from the 1940s to the 1960s, aided by the soldier settlement scheme. The population increased slightly from the early 1990s, rising from 24,000 in 1991 to over 26,000 in 2006. Most of this growth was in Yarrawonga, with some in Cobram and Numurkah. Page 7 of 81 Land use Land use Moira Shire is a predominantly rural area, but has significant residential areas in the main townships of Yarrawonga, Cobram, Numurkah and Nathalia and several smaller townships. Moira Shire encompasses a total land area of 4,057 square kilometres, of which more than two-thirds is used for agriculture. Other rural land uses include horticulture and viticulture, with the region being a major fruit, dairying and beef district. Tourism is also an important industry. Transport The Shire is served by the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Murray Valley Highway. Major features Major features of the Shire include the Murray River foreshore, Barmah State Park, the Lake Mulwala foreshore and Broken Boosey State Park. Page 10 of 81 Dominant groups Analysis of the five year age groups of Moira Shire in 2011 compared to Regional VIC shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+). Overall, 19.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.2% and 17.6% respectively for Regional VIC. The major differences between the age structure of Moira Shire and Regional VIC were: A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (5.2% compared to 4.1%) A larger percentage of persons aged 75 to 79 (4.3% compared to 3.2%) A larger percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (6.1% compared to 5.2%) A larger percentage of persons aged 80 to 84 (3.2% compared to 2.6%) Emerging groups From 2006 to 2011, Moira Shire's population increased by 1,040 people (3.8%).
