Lemon Fonds BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Raised in West Lorne, Ontario, James (Jim) Thomas Lemon attended the University of Western Ontario where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Geography (1955). He later attended the University of Wisconsin where he received a Master of Science in Geography (1961) as well as his Ph.D. (1964). In 1967, after having worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Prof. Lemon joined the University of Toronto Geography Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. His career has been spent in the field of urban historical geography of which he has written numerous articles, papers and chapters in books. He also has three books to his credit: The Poor Man's Country: A Geographical Study of Early South eastern Pennsylvania (1972), and Toronto Since 1918: An Illustrated History (1985). The former work, based on his Ph.D. thesis, won the Albert J. Beveridge Award in 1972 given by the American Historical Association. The latter was a finalist in the Toronto Book Awards in 1986. His most recent work Liberal Dreams and Nature's Limits: Great North American Cities since 1600 was published in 1996. His time at the University was also spent in several administrative positions including Graduate Secretary in the Department of History (1968-1971 & 1979-1980), Member and intermittent Chair of the Urban Studies Programme Innis College (1973- 1978) as well as Director of the Community Living Programme at Innis College from 1975-1978. Throughout his career, Prof. Lemon was an active member of several professional associations including the Canadian Association of Geographers, the American Association of Geographers, the Institute of Early American History and Culture, and the Organization of American Historians. Prof. Lemon, who remains a community activist, was chairman of the Annex Residents' Association in 1973 and the Confederation of Resident and Ratepayer Associations which led the fight against the Spadina Expressway. In 1975, he ran for the New Democratic Party in the provincial election and from 1976- 1978 served on the Toronto Board of Education. Prof. Lemon still lives and works from his home in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. His recent research relates to energy shortages and alternatives. He has continued to be active in urban policy and was a member of the Greater Toronto Area Task Force (Golden Commission). 1 University of Toronto Archives James T. Lemon fonds documents most aspects of Prof. Lemon’s life, in terms of both private and professional experiences. Records in Series 1 (Biographical), Series 14 (Christian Youth Groups) and Series 15 (Family Paper) give some overview of Prof. Lemon’s early life and family background. Records in Series 15 may be helpful to genealogical researchers interested in families who settled around West Lorne in south western Ontario. Biographical profiles, correspondence, papers, addresses, manuscripts, reviews and grant files in Series 1 through Series 6 document most aspects as his career as a urban historical geographer. In addition, Series 12, documents much of his involvement with professional associations as well as community groups. His activities in the political arena as an active New Democrat are also documented in Series 13. Course lectures and outlines, student papers, references, and correspondence found in Series 7 through Series 10 document his role as a teacher. Series 10 and 11 also give some evidence to his various administrative roles within the University. Of particular note are the early accessions of student term papers found in Series 7, Teaching. These cover a range of historical topics relating mainly to Toronto and, as secondary source material, may be of interest to those researching the urban history of Toronto. Lemon Fonds Series 1 Biographical 1964-1995 0.05 m This series contains curriculum vitae, career related correspondence regarding job offers, tenure, promotions, pensions, sabbaticals; the awarding of grants including applications and supporting documentations; biographical profiles submitted to Who's Who in America; and requests for financial support for travel. B1995-0018/001(01) - (07). B2005-0026/002 (01) Series 2 Correspondence 1964-2005 0.68 m This series is general professional correspondence filed chronologically in incoming and outgoing files. Most of the correspondence is between Prof. Lemon and colleagues throughout Canada and the United States regarding research, papers, projects, reviews, invitations, conferences, etc. There is also some correspondence with former students requesting references although most of this type of correspondence can be found in Series 8. Correspondence from 1995-2005 is mainly incoming. There is also a file of correspondence and related documents from his sabbatical in Australia, 1988-89. Finally this series contains one CD of e-mail from 1996-2003. B1995-0018/001 (08)-(18) B1995-0018/002-/003 B2005-0026/001 3 University of Toronto Archives James T. Lemon Fonds Series 3 Conferences and speaking engagements 1967-1995 0.25 m This series is composed of general files relating to conferences, symposiums, meetings of professional associations and lectures as well as files on specific events. The general files which are arranged chronologically contain mainly correspondence, agenda, commentaries by Prof. Lemon on papers and itineraries. They document his active participation in the field of historical and urban geography. Files on specific meetings such as the Historical Urbanization in North America Conference (1973), the Ontario Historical Geographers Conference (1976), Urban History Conference (1982) and the Association of American Geographers Meeting (1990), contain the types of records listed above as well as notes, drafts of papers presented by Prof. Lemon and, often, correspondence relating to the planning of these meetings. Records are filed chronologically, - the general files at the beginning of the series, followed by files on specific events. B1995-0018/004 B1995-0018/005 (01)-(05) B2005-0026/002 (02) Series 4 Publishing Activities 1964-2003 0.45 m Throughout his career, Prof. Lemon published over 40 scholarly articles including chapters in books as well as several non- refereed articles and reviews. Records in this series document much of this publishing activity and include correspondence with colleagues and publishers, draft manuscripts, comments by referees, notes, reviews and outlines. Records are arranged either by the name of the paper/article or by the name of the publisher/journal. There are also four files of general correspondence relating to publishing covering the years 1967-1969, 1980-1982, 1996-2003. The files themselves are arranged chronologically.
