...................................................................... 179 3 Executive Summary Carilion Clinic is committed to joining with our partners to pursue the essential work of improving and maintaining the health of the Roanoke Valley. To ensure that current needs are being addressed, we assess the health concerns of each community every three years to uncover issues, indicate where improvement is needed, and track and promote progress. Carilion Medical Center’s (CMC) 2021 Roanoke Valley Community Health Assessment (RVCHA) is complete with the adoption and dissemination of this report. The Community Health Assessment (CHA) process and the public availability of its findings enables our community to effectively maintain and improve health1. Current Environment Since the 2018 RVCHA, significant changes have impacted our community’s health. There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly disrupted all aspects of life. In Virginia, a state of emergency was declared on March 13, 2020, leading to temporary business closures, halting of routine health care services, and closures of schools—among a host of other challenges. Cases peaked in January of 2021, which also marked the end of the Community Health Survey period. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in substance use and mental health issues, with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reporting a 22% increase in drug overdoses from 2019 to 2020 for Southwest Virginia2.
